I work for public school and I was just wondering, in Korea, do Saturday's, Sundays and National Holidays get counted as sick days if you are sick for a long period and during these days?

In Korea, it isn't a good idea to be sick for a long period of time. No, the weekends don't count, but you would be worried about far bigger problems if you have this on your mind now. Is your health unstable for some reason?

It's a long story, but I need surgery because all the ligaments on one side of my ankle are torn, and it is school related. I tried to be professional and give them notice and do it the week of Children's Day so as to miss less work. In total, I am taking five days. The problem is that they insist that Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays count as sick days if they are taken in a row. Can this be right?

I don't see how. You don't work saturday or sunday, do you? How then can it be a sick day?

This is Korea. They count weekends as part of your monthly salary, even if you never work a weekend in your contract.

So yeah, in their convoluted Korean minds, sick Friday + sick Monday = 4 sick days.

lol

Read your contract.

My EPIK contract specifies "calendar days" in the 'Sick Leave' article and specifically states they are "inclusive of a national holiday, Saturday and Sunday."

The contract is ambiguous and there are two sentences that can be taken two different ways. So is there nothing I can do? I was already taking less time off then the doctor has recommended, and it's not a matter of pay, I have the coteacher from h*%# and she tortures me on a daily basis. This is just one more thing she can do.

If the contract is ambiguous, argue with them. Cool

What exactly does the contract say?

In that case, take it off in the middle of the week. Everyone is happy.

I wish, the doc says I have to stay in the hospital for five days. They are not budging on this. It's looking like I'll have to schedule it on a Tuesday and leave the hospital and just go in on Friday to break up the time. It is absolutely absurd.

hmmm...
In EPIK, isn't there like a district office or EPIK rep. to talk to about this? Like, if your school and principal aren't helping you out, isn't there district/EPIK representative you can get in touch with??

Yes there is, but I'm not in EPIK. The school says they don't have to do what city hall tells them to because I signed a contract with them, and city hall doesn't seem to be able to do anything. We had a meeting today, see other thread.

So, does anyone know if this is a case I can file with labor? I simply don't know what to do at this point. The school says that since I signed the contract with them, city hall can't tell them what to do. They're really backing me into a corner.
