Eeewww!
I was reading in another thread that they will confiscate food from travellers at the airport. I think they need to start letting some food in to feed this girl!

Miss Universe Australia model too skinny?
At 5 feet 11 inches tall and 108 pounds, model is malnourished, doctors say
Australia's Miss Universe contest was thrown into controversy on Thursday with doctors and dieticians complaining a leading finalist was "skin and bones" and dangerously malnourished. |

When you're that bony, you're no better looking than those bodybuilder women. |

Honestly I find her body actively unattractive; she looks like some sort of concentration camp victim. |

That is seriously disturbing. I wonder if the pageant director could keep a straight face when she said it was natural. I've seen many naturally skinny girls but none of them look like that. I loved the bit where the AMA president said they should institute a ban on models with a BMI under 20. I would take a bet that not one of the girls in that comp has a BMI over 20. |

Does anyone else get the advertisement in the middle of the text of the story? :
Lose 5 pounds!
Stay thin forever tips!
and another one I can't remember (and it changed when refreshed)
Ha ha! |

Whoa, that's frightening!
She has a BMI of 15. Kate Moss was 5'7" and 108 lbs, this girl is 5'11" and the same weight. I buy the genetic argument to some extent with models, but this girl literally looks dead. |

While I agree she looks unhealthy, I think Western culture as a whole is unhealthy. It seems to me that beauty, and weight in particular, has a small bit of "wiggle" room that is acceptable. If she were to gain 20 lbs (still thin for her height) our media would likely call her "curvy" or worse yet, "bloated". Yet, at her current weight, she is called "bony" and "anorexic". Maybe this isn't the best example for me to rant on; there are plenty of celebrities which reflect this dichotomy well.
I think less emphasis should be put on thinness/weight and more so on fitness when discussing beauty and health. Overall, I just find it sad. While her err... condition(?) is largely psychological,I can't help but think it's greatly cultural/systemic.
I apologize for ranting, but this is one issue I kind of get worked up on. Also, I don't think that focusing on the weight of someone with a body disorder and openly criticizing it is going to offer the positive self-esteem boost necessary to overcome the condition. |

You are absolutely right, DorothyParker, it is counter-productive, and these pagents are vulgar displays of mysogyny anyway, but it is important to prevent such an unrealistic and unhealthy body image from being paraded as ideal. Or, in the case of the pagent people, to cover their a**es.
It's a lose lose situation. Don't say anything publically, then Ms. Oz receives positive reinforcement for her condition, AND they the pagent people are accused of promoting unhealty ideals for young women, or worse. Say something, and it just feeds the media weight-obsessed frenzy and perhaps hinders the progress of Ms. Oz's recovery.
The world is more weight obsessed than ever before, and the fluctuations in stars' weights seems to have replaced any real news or gossip in headlines. So boring. So annoying. |
