I'm having problems with my coteacher and she has been less than honest, so I started recording our conversations. I used those recordings in a meeting we had with City Hall yesterday and was told it was illegal to record anyone in Korea without telling them you are recording them, just like in the states. I've always read on this board that recording in Korea is legal and can be used in government proceedings. Can anyone shed some light on this?

In the US the rules are different state by state.

In some states, as long as one party is aware (in this case, you) then secret recordings of the other party are legal. In other states it is illegal to record unless both parties are aware.

Maybe someone else can tell us about the law in Korea.

Forget about the law! If you have to secretely record conversations with your co-workers in any setting other than a formal/law related setting, something a seriously wrong!

I'm with Joe666 on this... except for the fact you should not forget about the law. In K-land, an assumption the law bears any resemblance to that at home (in the 'west') is a good way to land your English-speaking butt in jail. Laughing

I don't know what K-law says about recording people; however, I do know 'Daves's' is not the place to be asking.

Easy. Just tell the person ONCE:

I just want you to know that any conversation you have with me might be recorded.

In the US, there's the "Reasonable Expectation of Privacy" exception to this rule. If your school has CCTV, then you have to assume that all your actions, and possibly words, are being recorded. No reasonable person would expect privacy in this situation. There's also a "Third Party" exception in some states.
