I am guilty of watching some reality tv shows. For this topic/thread ... Project Runway. I've seen the US, Canada, and UK versions ... and now (off and on) - Korea.
Fashion wise ... I'm at a loss.
If I couldn't speak English ... by watching any of the three versions above, I could guess what the 'theme' of each episode was. But of the Korean version (where I can only pick out several words here and there) ... I couldn't tell for the life of me, what the hell they were making. Tonight I caught up with the final 3.
I just dont get it! What fashion are they going for? IS it a fashion? The woman that had her models all come out in bizare clothing with HUGE black painted lips on all of her girls wtf?
I don't speak a lot of Korean. Just some basics, enough to get by - and be nice about it.
Anyone watch this show and can tell me what the 'fashion themes' were? Just about everything I saw was kinda odd, and not something that you would see in a 'line' of clothing. The sewing wasn't great. Combinations of lines, pieces, additions ... weird.
To be honest, I was looking forward to seeing some beauitful mixes of tradition and 'now'. Air brush like colors, flowing materials ...
I know there is avant garde which is supposed to be fairly over the top - but .... ?
Of those of you that followed it ... what are your thoughts ... and more importantly ... did anyone understand enough of it to be able to shed some light for me?
Cheers,
G |

Terrible show, but I think the point of it is more who can put on the best American accent rather than anything about fashion.
This is the only country in the world where you fake an American accent to sound sophisticated. |

Project Runway without Tim Gunn. Kinda like the "Nuttcracker" without the Sugar Plum Fairy. |

Heh, but actually almost all the contestants have lived/studied in the states. |

And that's their claim to legitimacy. Pretty pathetic, isn't it? |

I caught this abortion of a show this afternoon too. It was funny when they had a scene of one of the contestants visiting her American friend. Had nothing to do with the show, other than to show apparently that she had a foreign friend. It was like a 4 second scene.
If the Korean media really want to drive their opinion home on Westerners being drug-addled AIDS carriers, they really need to stop also making us the coolest person in the room, or the must-have friend/accessory.
Those giant waxed lips were the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in Korea...and I've seen a lot of bizarre things here. |

No, that's my claim for why they have American accents. Is it confusing? |
My claim is that they milk those accents unnaturally to sound more sophisticated. Is that hard to understand? |

My girlfriend (Korean) says the show stinks. Two of the contestants are apparently in the show because of their connections. They were two of the finalists, one of whom seems to have copied many of her final designs from other famous brands. |
