A friend's brother works at Apple Korea and told me that Korea will get the iPhone when they release the new model sometime late June or early July.

good articles (i googled, as i was looking for iphone info) relating to how the Korean phone industry is finding itself waaaay behind the times because of past gouging by the chaebols, and how they are scrambling to play catch up.

Yeah many in the industry have proclaimed that the "Golden Era" for the chaebols is over, and it's rapidly becoming a "adapt or die" for these guys. The glory hey days of raking in the dough for both the telecom providers as well as the handset manufacturers like Samsung and LG is gone along with the corrupt gov't policies that allowed them to get away with it. The iPhone WILL be launched in Korea, the only question is when, and SKT as well as others are trying to pre-empt things in hopes of softening the blow come this summer.

I hate all that 'ohhh Apple is evil. Microsoft is evil' crap. Why are they evil? Are you a 13 year old boy?

Probably because their stuff is better than everyone else's and they, quite simply work.

No b.s. drivers to download, no viruses (or very rare,) no problems getting stuff to work, great industrial design. For all the reasons Microsoft (esp. Vista) sucks.

How easy is it to sync a calender, contacts, photos, etc. from a "normal" phone to a computer.. not very. The iPhone.. well, it just works.

I don't ever have any intention of owning a mac because I can't be bothered dealing with the compatibility and finding software that works with it. But you really cannot beat the Touch and iPhone right now. They are amazing pieces of kit. Out of all of the little gadgets and pieces of technology that I have had over the years, my iPod Touch is definitely the most impressive. I wouldn't hesitate in picking up an iPhone if the contract was ok.

Probably not, you'd have to use some sort of International roaming through your Korean provider most likely.

It will be interesting to see what adaptations Apple makes with the iPHone prior to launching it in Korea. I think the iPhone will sell extremely well in its first few months, but after that, will be telling on to what extent Apple is ready to take on Samsung and LG on their home turft.

To date, iPhone has been a failure in India and a disappointment in Japan. There were differing reasons for the failures but, the iPhone will need to make changes or they are going to get run out of the Korean market pretty quickly.

I agree! But fortunately i think for Korea the recipe for success is fairly straight forward since the iPhone is fundamentally a superb product. I think the first is quite obvious and that is that the iPhone needs to include all the standard features of Korean smart phones today such as DMB.

The other thing that i hope changes (i'm not optimistic about Apple having any real power of leaning on the service providers though) is web rates. Web/data rates are quite high - one reason why web on phones is not very popular in Korea - whereas in the states web traffic on the iPhone has tripled exponentially. With AT&T i could pay $99 a month and get unlimited everything like data, messaging, and voice (excluding MobileMe subscription fee). If they had a plan like that around 100,000 won a month, i'd be all over it. Unfortunately, i have a feeling the Korean service providers are going to hack everything up into separate rates which may hamper the growth of the iPhone in Korea because a good portion of the iPhone is the really good web surfing capabilities...

I wonder if I'll be able to use my existing iPhone 3G here. I've been waiting almost 9 months now...

Without TV its dead in the water. It'll never be more than a niche product.
Far too many koreans watch TV on their phones, especially the more expensive ones with bigger screens, etc.
Apple isn't quite the status symbol in korea that it is elsewhere. That won't carry it here.
