I'm wondering what you home theater buffs think about my choices. I've decided not to get an LG big screen TV since Sony makes better LCDs and Samsung better plasmas.

I'm considering the Cannes 750 50-inch plasma for around 2.5 million won or spending a million won more for a 52-inch Sony Bravia LCD.

What would you choose?

In another country, I'd go Sony. Here, where they tax the heck out of Sony due to market protection, I'd buy the Samsung. Save a million, buy a PS3 or Blu-ray player, and a bunch of movies.

At those prices, I'd be looking at 1080p projectors, though. You can't get Panasonic, which are the best, but you can get a new 1080p Epson here for around 2.4.

What should I expect to spend for a (relatively cheap, but...) decent 1080p LCD? And where should I expect to find the best prices?

It all depends on size. 1-2.5 million. Korean is really the only option in Korea because of pricing. Even with that said, Korean panels are still 30% more expensive than the states.

What do you think of LG LCDs? I know Samsung does better plasmas but I hear they are equal in LCD.

Sony Bravia LCDs and LEDs are ripoffs.

sony is notorious for their high prices...even back in the states. i was in the market for a +50" LCD tv back home. i went with a 52" samsung series 8. from the tons of research i have done, samsung is the industry standard in either plasma or lcd. so much so that sony actually uses some samsung components...like the 120hz processor. there are tons of manufacturers out there, but internally the components are made by a handful of companies including samsung and sony. samsung (pavv) is the way to go here...especially for the price.

a word to the wise, plasmas get pretty damn hot and have to be in a completely dark room. lcd's sacrifice some quality but can be in a well lit room...plus they don't get nearly as hot. more heat=$$$ energy bill.

If you are solely interested in picture quality, plasma is the way to go. (Right now.)

If you are going to be using it as a computer monitor, get a LCD. Otherwise get which ever one is the best price and looks the best.

For me I like Plasmas over LCD. You get true blacks and high contrast, an almost instant refresh rate and it actually still looks good at a 165 degree viewing angle unlike LCD which start to look dim at about 80 degrees. They are also cheaper then LCD for larger sizes. Animation looks amazing on Plasmas. Plasmas also don't have to be in a completely dark room anymore than an old CRT has to be in a completely dark room.

They don't have as accurate flesh tones though and colors tend to be over saturated. I don't mind that and most TVs allow you to set more than one pre-set anyways.

I think that LCD is more popular though, so down the road will probably have a higher resale value. Something to think about depending on how long you plan to be here.
