And blame the Chaebols for the high data rates. Interesting was to read that internet on phones has not been "wanted" by the public because of the highly publicized suicide of a 13 year-old Korean boy who unwittingly ran up a bill to like 25 million won by playing some online game on his phone the first month internet was introduced on handphones here.
Since that incident combined with the chaebol gouging data rates, internet on phone has never caught on in Korea. Penny-wise, pound-foolish, as look at all the ways to make money through phone internet access have spawned. |

Without TV its dead in the water. It'll never be more than a niche product.
Far too many koreans watch TV on their phones, especially the more expensive ones with bigger screens, etc.
Apple isn't quite the status symbol in korea that it is elsewhere. That won't carry it here. |
I've read that in Japan, another company developed an add-on battery pack that would allow DMB-TV to be possible with the iPhone 3G. But, the pack was making the phone too big. I don't think it's been sold commercially yet.
iPhone will also need their iTunes store to be fully compatible, including games, emoticons and other applications.
I just wrote a Global Marketing Report for one my mba classes on this subject. The first part was only environmental analysis. The next half of the report will be the operational analysis. But... it will be interesting to see how Apple proceeds. |

i havent heard any release dates. the new rumour is that sk and kt are fighting over exclusive rights. they are also reluctant to give into the revenue sharing requirement by apple.
this thing is driving me mad. we knew in december that wipi was gonna be scrapped. they've had 6-7 months to make a deal with apple, and these douchebag telecom companies still cant work something out!
i may just get a blackberry bold... |

| stupid Q: will the iphone be able to pick up a wifi signal so one could use the internet for free? Are the current 'haptic' phones in Korea able to do this? |

Apparently that news link is false and KT denies having reached any kind of concrete deal with Apple. |

red_devil, because of the lack of info i could find on the net, i kinda figured it was false.
i will be moving to Korea July 21st to start teaching - does that mean i should just keep my iPod Touch instead of trying to sell it to fund my iPhone in Korea??? |

well...the iphone 3G passed KCC (like the american FCC) certification in June. the iphone 3GS just received certification today.
that means that we could see a release any day now.
there is a rumour of a mid august 3gs release.
we'll see.... |

You can always sell your ipod touch once you get to Korea on the buy/sell section of these forums (although watch out for low ballers and trolls, but I've sold and bought on these forums with no problem). Might be nice to have for the plane ride, although many of the airlines offer great free movies on demand. |
