Your history book is broken. Korea has invaded Japan many times, though the recent track record was quite poor and Korea contracted completely during the last five centuries, but between 300 B.C. to the ninth century AD, Korea ran the show in huge chunks of Japan.
You've confused "hasn't invaded recently" for "never".
Ironically, it was Korea's borrowing of technology from China that allowed them to invade Japan with relative ease and basically take over the place.
OH NO! Wait a minute, that would make Korea as evil as Japan as they launched an invasion and took over the place. Oh, wait. Only when Korea was in charge of Japan they made the Japanese look amateurish in how they slaughtered people. Holy crap, now Korea is suddenly more evil than Japan.
Sorry to shatter every idea you hold dear and inform you that everything you know is wrong. |

Uh-oh...if we're getting that far back in history it gets complicated. Soga, whose family ran things in Japan for some hundred years around the 5th century (?) was apparently originally from Baekjae, the south-west side of Korea. The thing was though, that back then Baekjae was fighting against Koguryo from the north and enlisted a lot of military help from Japan in exchange for their technology and literary supplies, religious education and the like.
After Beakjae went down around 664? AD, Japan sent a large deployment of soldiers and ships to try to rebuild their ally that had just fallen, but they were unsuccessful in that venture and Shilla started running the show, if my memory serves... |

Interesting observation. Sounds like a guy with a good head on his shoulders. |

Korea won't go to a world court because they have no confidence in their own case. They know they will lose.
I would say most of the dispute comes from the bitter feelings from Japan.
They feel disrespected by Japan (rightfully so) and envious at times (also rightfully so). Losing even a tiny piece of land would enrage the whole Korean population. |
Is Japan willing to take this issue to an internationl arbitrator?
I would love to see that happen. Imagine how outraged the nationalists would be here if they lost. |

I'm pretty sure they are. I think that's what all the fuss is about. Korea controls the islands and Japan will never try to take them by force. The only option they have is for an international arbitrator to settle it.
Korea doesn't want to do this because they control them already.
I'm curious how fishing rights and the such are being handled? Is Japan fishing those waters anyway? How about control of the shipping lanes etc.? |
