| WTF? That sentence comes outta nowhere. It's almost like it's taken from a completely different article and pasted in between two paragraphs in her article. Weird. |

I see that she is putting other American citizens down and what not in order to feel better and feel better psychologically in Korea and wants to see Korea only with rose-colored glasses. I guess the Korean Herald wants to print whatever they get, and she sent in a letter, and either the newspaper didn't read what she wrote or for cultural reasons saw nothing wrong with such a sweeping statement. It's a horrible statement.
She probably hasn't lived in Korea for a long time and has a decent job and feels she knows everything about what foreigners deal with. |

I haven't seen Korean university students ceding their seats for those who are elderly. I have seen that done by men in their 30s. I do it very often. I don't think Koreans do it more than foreigners. In the US plenty of people give up their seats for the elderly.
I doubt Christianna Lee has been in Korea for a very long time. Also, if she has an F-4 visa she would have certain legal protections that we foreigners who have no Korean ancestry simply won't have. Of course, not every kyopo gives a rosy picture of the country and the situation.
It depends on your job situation. She appears to be at a public school, I am guessing. If you work at a hagwon that exploits you, and you are kyopo you may sing a different tune.
It's so much easier for us to be exploited, and that's the main complaint foreigners have. Yes, the rudeness does bother some, but for me it's the government and the employers.
I was having dinner with a friend, and she was talking about how YBM was trying to cheat her friend out of some money. I didn't get all the details. It's how people are treated at the workplace which is very important.
I have a feeling the woman is rather new to Korea, and she's in her honeymoon phase and sees herself as better than your average American who comes here. |

Poor girl missed day one of "Editorials 101" and never learned about the three most important letters in writing personal opinion pieces...CYA. |

I can definitely understand some new arrivals feeling displeased with some of the racist things that some foreigners say about Koreans. I deplore racism of any kind, but her comments makes me think she doesn't care for Americans in general or America. If the worst thing about Korea are the foreigners, and she is a foreigner, then she is, ipso facto, one of the worst things about Korea according to her own words:) LOL However, she thinks she is better than your average North American. Well, good for her, if she thinks she is better than us.
I suggest that she never complain after the honeymoon is over for her, because then she will definitely be one of the worst things about Korea per her own words.
It's just so funny how some folks want to fit so hard in the society, so they decide to bash us to prove they are worthy apostates to the American national identity or what have you. There is nothing salubrious about trashing Koreans or Americans in a prejudicial manner.
I often buy your newspaper, so I can know more about what's happening in my host country, Korea. I do my best to have a positive experience in Korea and to interact as positively as I can with Koreans. However, the level of xenophobia and disrespect against foreigners is not something I find to be positive. Recently, Christianna Lee had a letter printed that said, and I quote, "The worst thing about Korea is the foreigners". I take it Christianna Lee does not like foreigners. Well, many Korean Americans do like their fellow Americans and don't say such things and make such sweeping statements. I am disappointed that you printed that letter, and I will not

You guys are definitely right in that it should not have been printed.
I am trying to make content for expats in Korea and this was something that slipped by me. I read dozens of articles and columns every day and I skimmed over that one at too fast a pace.
Christianna means well in her usual column when she writes about arts in Korea, mostly Daegu (which is seriously underrepresented in media).
I work hard to keep generalizations of all kinds out of Expat Living (unlike another English newspaper). There is so much good that expats in Korea do, and there is so much in Korea to see and experience -- and that is my focus.
In short, I am sorry and this will not happen again.

I'm sorry, but I'm almost inclined to agree with the quote in question.
Many posters on this board complain about OTHER foreigners in Korea, and to be honest we are a pretty uncouth lot. The more time I spend in Korea, the less time I spend with other foreigners. (The last time I actually hung out with other foreigners, outisde of a GEPIK meeting was in January).
The amount of mindless whining and bitching that goes on, on this board is testamount to a certain Western attitude I'm glad for the most part to be rid of. Not to mention, the quality of people Korea attracts is pretty low. I'm not saying every apple is bad, but rather, there are enough bad apples on the tree that I'd rather not have an apple and have an orange instead.
