I have a Compaq Presario laptop that came with a gig of ram. The laptop started to act funny the past week. The laptop would turn on, stay at a black screen, then turn itself off and back on. After doing this 10 or so times, the laptop would eventually boot (but would freeze at the startup screen).

I did some looking on the net and the issue seems to be bad memory? Has this happened to anyone else?

It could be a whole host of things.......RAM is one of the likely things.......

..................bring it to a computer store and ask one of the guys to try replacement RAM in there just for a minute to see if that's the prob. If the lappy works, then buy some RAM off him.

Get 2GB. It's cheap as chips nowadays.

I totally agree with eamo, trouble shooting (I almost wrote shiiting) is normally a process of deduction through a proccess of elimination.

Power, corrupt system file, RAM (doubt it actually), hard drive problem (corruption/bad sectors).

Try doing a restore, chkdsk, memtest....?
