im american. i left america for a reason. the narrow mindedness and closed view of its citizens that think "the world ends at the border" drives me up the wall. corporate greed run amock, politcal corporution the new norm, and general ignorance of 300million plus make me wish to never return.

but here can be so much worse. rampant nationalism. inferiority complexes abound. "we want to learn english but we hate u foreingers coming here and ruining our country" state of mind makes my skin crawl. how do these people think they r leading the world and r so better than everyone else when theyve been conqured over and over again and enslaved and pushed around by every country east and west of the pacific, yet oh no, dont say anything negative about daehanmingook "we r world leader, though we're not actually leading the world at anything except publically shooting ourselves in the foot every chance we get" i shutter when my k-g/f talks about marriage and living here forever. never never never.

point im trying to make is... im just so unhappy in my home country and in this country ive tried living in for nearly 3 years now. i dont know what to do, or where to go.

i know no place is perfect, all countries have their faults. but i just want a place to be happy in. to not put up with distorted confucionism. to not smack my head when i learn 1/5th of my countrymen cant find our contry on a world map. a place to live in peace where i dont have to listen to "i hate foreigners, i hate usa, they r dirty criminals that r ruining our country..... but oh please, pretty please teach me english... theres no real purpose for it. i mean yeah, it will influence what job i get, but not that i'll ever actually use it at my job"

I don't mean this to be a flame...but if YOU are not happy, then no place you go will make you happy. You've got to take control of the 'environment' as well. For starters I suggest not getting into conversations where people are saying stuff like "I hate usa". That way will lead to no good.

Well the only thing you can do is to just focus on the good of whatever country you are in. Or just get some prozac or something. No place is perfect.

Get a job in Laos. I've heard nothing but good things about that place.

All your objections about USA and Korea are moot there.

BTW, I had two friends who despised Korea for the 3 years they lived here. Then they went away for a year and a half, and ended up returning. They see it in a totally different light now.

One thing to remember: nothing ever stays the same. You're either moving forward or backwards. Switch gears and you will start moving forward. 3 years is enough, try something else. What do you have to lose anyway?

OP - Cowboy the f**k up and be a man - You are lucky you have a job right now. I have friends back home who have lost their jobs, homes, and families. Every country in the planet hates each other, deal with it. Smile, take their money, and go do stuff that makes you happy. Pretty simple. Sorry to be so blunt but now is not the time to complain.

I agree with BPL, shut up. This is the sort of soft whining that makes your generation a big biological sinkhole. Do you really think that you are worse off than others? You have a job, which is easy, you have a girl that obviously loves you and wants to marry you. But wait, you arent happy. Id say be a man and at least be honest with your gf, and tell her you have no intention of ever getting married to her. You have it better than most people back home. You have it better than 95% of the planet. But you arent happy.

That's a giant flaw of the human system.

We can have so many good things but most of us will never be happy with what we have.

I know a guy who has all things better than me, but I'm still happier than him.

It's all a state of mind.

Compare your life to someone who's dying of ebola. You'll start to feel happy again.

OP, all these things are minor things that barely affect your standard of living. Think about it this way. They aren't gestapho out to throw you into camps and kill you.

It could always be worse

Well, if there's one place you really can go to and whine, it's here; sometimes I think that's 75% of the purpose of this board (and most Internet message boards)

For whatever it's worth, my advice to you is to research what other countries might be available to you and make you more happy, and also try your hardest to be be happy here in spite of all the things that bother you. If you can manage to carve out a little happiness here, think of how euphoric you'll feel elsewhere once you get there.

Maybe also try to get a GF who's willing to leave the country with you when the time comes. Easier said than done, that last one.

You make your own happiness. You can't rely on anyone else.

Whats your problem? You don't care much for the place yourself.

Anyone is free to slag my country off in earshot - who cares?

I can understand some of the things you said. You didn't like the rampant materialism that you saw in America. I did not either, and I was surprised to see it's much worse in certain ways over here when it comes to materialism. No doubt, it's surprising. Much of the spirituality here is overshadowed by the excessive focus on materialism. That's probably one reason that Koreans are often unhappy and have a high suicide rate, though it's high in Japan, too.

Also, as far as the superiority/inferiority complex, I did also think it was bizarre that they could look down on Caucasians when it was Americans who defeated the Japanese in World War II, and they are the ones who helped keep South Korea from being communist, and they were conquered by the Japanese. Still, you can find that mentality in the Middle East where they have an ancient civilization and take pride in it.

Not all American states are alike. They are all different. If you want to teach somewhere where the people seem friendlier and more welcoming, than go to Costa Rica or Chile. You won't make much money, but you will make more friends, and you will learn Spanish, to boot, which would help you when you go back to the U.S.

I can't say I was unhappy when I was in the U.S. per se, but I wasn't crazy about having George Bush as president, I wasn't crazy about the state I was living in, but I know there are many other states, and I know now that George Bush is no longer the president. Also, happiness to a large extent comes from within. Focus on the people who have a good attitude in Korea.

I suggest you read a book called, "The Lost Art of Compassion" by Lorne Ladner. It's a pretty good book. No place will really make you happy, though some places do help like sunshine can help. And if you feel this place isn't it, then you can try somewhere else more your style.

OP - you left America but America didn't leave you - what we've been raised with and how will always be with us, wherever you go or live. I'm amazed at how no matter where I travel, if there's a conversation going on, sooner or later someone will say how much they want to come to America - even when it seems so absurd because of all the problems you and I know exist.

it does sound like it's time for you to leave K and travel some more - there are other countries that offer different perspectives on life in general -

in the mean time, be aware that what you are feeling is perfectly normal and part of growing older - growing pains never really cease - but could also be indicative of a sense that you haven't really satisfied deeper needs w/i yourself.

what I've learned in my own experience is volunteering to help someone else has always made me feel better about the world around me - helping to improve things, make life a bit better - if you can get involved w/something you really are interested in, it's certain to give you more focus. start asking yourself serious questions about what you really want and need in life, but don't be afraid of the answers.

then start planning on what it will take to get there and accomplish it.

don't worry about the naysayers - it takes courage to question the world around us - and as Americans, we actually have been given a responsibility, it seems, everyone looks at us for answers, but of course we get blamed for making mistakes and even worse, for our military and govt having caused so many problems in the world.

it's not easy, not at all; please understand there are many, many more who feel similar to you.
