|
|
Yesterday, city office sent in their observers to the school. The week before, my assigned co-teacher for the class told me to expect their presence and prep a demo class. I told her my expected class plan would suffice. City office didn't even bother to show up last year; why would they show up this year? Besides, I didn't have a movie planned so my regular sauce is good enough for the brass.
Lo and behold, city office observers did show up. 20 minutes late, and thusly missed the expected class time. Strike 1.
Late 3rd period they came by again. Problem is, I don't have a third period. I have a 4th period. They're too early. Strike 2.
Around 7th period they come again. Well, I appreciate the effort on their part, but I don't have a 7th period. In fact, I don't think the other teachers have a 7th period on Mondays. I'm in the classroom removing a few posters and waiting for the cleanup crew. Strike 3. I am outta here- it's clock-out time.
So on that note, how was your Demo class experience? Did you even have to give a demo class? |

They only show up if you have a reputation of being really good, or really bad. In the case of being really bad they will decide whether to discontinue your contract. In the case that you are really good to make you a mentor for other teachers through other open lessons. They probrubully talked to one of your co-teachers found out you were doing a good job and decided not to show up.
For the most part the vast majority of them don't speak English have an extremly limited Knowledge of students centered or task based learning.
I had one of these clowns show up when I was using a peer dictation activity from Andrew Finch. For anyone who has worked with this material it's really good for getting students up and out of there seats and using the target language. I can imagine this pencil pusher from the Ivory tower completly misinterpreted the activity and thought the class was a complete disaster. Do I care,no. These people should stick to what they do best like these waste of time Opening and Closing ceremonies. |

I have shocking spelling and hate the spell police but you have one word there that is spelled so bad I am tempted to point it out. |

I was told the big wigs were coming for mine, so I prepared a really good lesson. It ended up being 3 Korean E teachers who I have great rapport with anyway and I got all 10s in any case.
It's a joke. If they want to fire you, they will use it as an excuse. It won't be the reason. |

Contract begun in October and my open class is September. Unfortunately it is with a very weak teacher who seems to have a real nervous disposition, and for one time only she wants to create the lesson plan. |

Lol exactly. As IF they would go through any effort(s) at all to get rid of you. Wham bam you're gone. End of story. I would have given them lines. All of them. "I will not be late for English class." 1000x. On the board!
As for spelling, only two words are necessary: 'Korea Sparkling' (yes, capitalized). |

I was told here that open classes are done for the Korean co-teachers and it's them that are "responsible" and or even "graded" on the results, even though the FT is supposed to be responsible for 80% of the teaching and possibly even preparing the lesson plan itself. |

The description on my public school contract reads 'Assistant Teacher'. |

Yes, but the education offices don't know that we actually do most if not all of the work for our classes. Go into school today and say "well, what do you have planned for our class? I'll assist you" and see how far that flies. It bothers me that even though we're evaluated by our coworkers---who many times don't even show up for our classes---we are not given the opportunity to write evaluations for them. I think the office of education might want to know that most of the teachers aren't doing their jobs. Or maybe not, who knows, it's much easier to just say that native speaker teachers don't care about their students. |

I've done this since day one. No f'ing way I'm doing all the work. I'm there to help with pronunciation and to battle Konglish. Don't think for a second that I'm joking when I say that I take the title of 'assistant teacher' quite seriously.
It bothers me that even though we're evaluated by our coworkers---who many times don't even show up for our classes---we are not given the opportunity to write evaluations for them.
I've never been evaluated by anyone. I use all of my sick days. The only warning I've ever had is 'do not come to work drunk and smash things or we will deduct if from your deposit.

I refuse to do the planning for my regular classes, being an 'assistant teacher'.
I do extra work for 'Special Eengleeshee Klessuh', which is enough.
Sounds like you got one of the bad ps jobs. I do virtually nothing. I deserve a raise. |

You've got quite the attitude there.
The representatives used their own valuable time to come out to see you and they waste the better part of their day trying to track you down.
Perhaps you were subliminally avoiding them for whatever reason.
Take some initiative, be a little more proactive, and use your co-teacher to effectively communicate with the officials. |

I vote A and C, just because I don't like using B as an insult. But seriously, what was the guy to do? Invent classes that don't exist? Subliminaly avoiding them? How? The FT is the one person who can't hide at a PS. The reps wasted their own time by not checking his schedule to see when his classes actually were, and wasted his time by their stupid visits. |
