Would you prefer the easy life of Paradise in the Caribean, or the rush and drone-like slave-a-tude of Canada and the conformity and non-existance of Japan?

You mean like Trinidad or Guyana, racked with ethnic strife between Indians and Blacks? Doesn't seem to me that multiculturalism is doing too well in those places. By the way, life in paradise ain't so easy, which is testified by the massive brain drain those countries experience. Not many educated Jamaicans want to stay in the paradise of Kingston.

In this age? It's impossible. That country will be sanctioned, petitioned and generally run over in the future

That sounds democratic.

But, that's how it goes. I know of no political party who has campaigned on a platform of totally rearranging the demographic makeup of a country and won. Immigration policy is made in negoiations with "the diversity" (increased to gain "ethnic" support), activists and the financial/economic elite. The actual population has no say.

In Canada, it is the Royal Bank of Canada who most loudly and agressively campaigns for massive increases in the immigratoin rate. They currently support 500k a year, up from the current rate of 250k. And once you understand the money multiplier in a fractional reserve system, their reasoning for this is quite clear. Banks want more deposits, business wants depressed wages, activists want jobs being activists and the diversity wants to import their cousin (in the UK, this is done with a marriage visa). ha. Democracy.

I'm actually in favour or immigration (careful immigration) but I find the total inability of the ruling elite to speak honestly about their intentions and the consequences to be troubling.

No wonder:

That's funny. I took an Immigration course last semester, and our Professor gravitated towards policy discussions. She asked whether the needs of immigrants were represented, and the class (which leaned liberal) seemed to be largely of the opinion that since lawful permanent residents (LPRs) weren't citizens yet and couldn't vote, they thus couldn't represent themselves.

I pretty much took the opposite view. Especially in a society like the US where immigrants can become citizens, this becomes an important issue for naturalized immigrants. They are heavily invested in getting their family over (and that's completely legitimate).

The point is that the Republicans shot themselves in the foot the last few years. The white majority in the US is going to slowly fade, to be replaced largely by Hispanics and somewhat less by Asians. Yes, Hispanics. Which the GOP had done everything to try and frustrate, except for GOP politicians who actually hailed from the South, such as former TX governor George W. Bush and AZ senator John McCain. Now, I personally don't agree with the GOP position on immigration, but mises is absolutely right. Even if the GOP position were the right position, it would be completely frustrated by the revolt that interested parties have in immigration.
