This summer I will be able to travel for a month or so. My budget, including airfare, is 3,000 USD. I will be traveling from the USA. Right now I'm thinking:

1. Latin America. A friend is interested in going to Peru to check out Machu Picchu. I'm interested in Argentina and Brazil, even though they are more expensive. Upside is airfare to Brazil from where I am is 570 bucks.

2. The Middle East: Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Israel. I've done this before, wouldn't mind doing it again.

3. Sub-saharan africa. Kenya-Uganda-Rwanda-Tanzania. Or South Africa-Botswana-Namibia (or something along those lines). Problem is not sure I could do this w/in my budget.

What is out:
-Southeast Asia. Been there a couple times, and friend has no interest in going there. If friend bails, I might look into going to the Philippines though, since that is one place in the region I haven't been and would like to visit.
-Central America. Was there in Dec/January. I can also easily go there on vacations when I'm back in the working world.
-Europe. Friend has extensively traveled there and I'm not gung ho, plus limited budget.

So just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or comments on the places mentioned above. Central Asia might be cool, but not sure I can do it with the budget.

Option 2 looks rockin and option 1 looks pretty darn cool and interesting. Option 3 far out dude. Adventurer go find your destiny of new interesting experiences that'll surely change your life in ways you never imagined or considered...

I've done the South America trip. A month is barely enough time for just Argentina. You could, with your budget and time, do (southern) Peru pretty good. I did Cuzco some sacred valley stuff, Lake Titicaca and La Paz and the salt flats in one month. Its pretty action packed but doable. PM if you have any other questions.

Also remember it will be winter this summer in South America (if that makes sense), so there will be rain and it does get a tad bit cold in some places.

I'd be checking the weather first in those places, think you'll find yourself in the monsoon or desert summer heat.

Check out the Indian Himalaya, or the mountains in Pakistan which should be nice weather wise at least.

1 week in China (Shanghai or Hong Kong to Beijing)
2 weeks in Russia (Trans-Siberian: Beijing to Moscow via Mongolia)
1 week in Eastern Europe (Moscow to Minsk, Warsaw & Prague)

That would be a pretty good month.

- Diverse range of countries and people.
- Variety of weather conditions.
- Two continents all overland.

That's a great itinerary if you want to spend the whole time on the road and just take quick snapshots of the main tourist sites. Sounds like a Korean tour actually. You would also sorely regret spending half your trip on the most deeply boring leg of it.

I'd vote for Peru.

I've never been to Peru myself, but a friend of mine did two years ago and he simply loved it.

Peru is sick, but 3 weeks is barely enough time to see it. You could power trek it though. Just remember that a bus from Lima to Cuzco (when I was there) takes 24 hours.... So yeah... remember that kind of stuff.

All in all, Peru is fark'n amazing. Manchu Pichu is not over rated, and there is so much to see and do. If you can, and this is if you power thru... check out Bolivia.

Maybe skip northern Peru and do a Cuzco (sacred valley), Lake Titikaka, La Paz and Salt flats tour?

thats what I did in my 3 week tour. (I had to rush back to Beunos Aires for a flight)
