My coworkers and I are starting to think about vacation in July, and we recently approached the school letting them know of our intentions. They came back to us and told us we had to use 2 of our 10 paid days on the days that the school would be closed. No problem, except we would be getting paid for those days regardless. Erego, my thinking is that we should either be paid double for those 2 days, by using 2 vacation days, or we should have 2 extra vacation days in December. Basically, the school is trying to take away 2 of our vacation days.

Do you agree? Has anyone else encountered this? How did you deal with it?

Is this a hagwon? I dislike those things SO much. When I worked in a hagwon they didn't give me my winter vacation and then they had the audacity to dock two of my summer vacation days because of the visa run to Japan Evil or Very Mad BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways.... I'd say that unless it's stated in your contract that your days shall be counted when the school is planned on being closed, that they don't have a case. Don't let your school do this!!!!!!!!

It is a hagwon.

Exactly my feeling. It doesn't state anywhere in my contract that we have to count those 2 days as part of our vacation. We're definitely not backing down.

Good for you! Does it say anything about your hagwon telling you when you can take your days? Then they might have a nail to hook you on, only if you let them however. It's common knowledge that unless otherwise states, that your vacation is suppose to be taken 1/2 in winter and 1/2 in summer.

2 here and 3 there is BS unless you agree to it.

Well, it does say it has to be confirmed by the school, which is no problem. I was planning on taking my vacation a week before that, so pushing it back one week is really no problem. It's just that I would, in essence, be giving up 2 vacation days. Basically it just seems like another way for them to screw the waygook out of money/freedom

Yeah, Avalon did that to me my first year. They "gave" us an extra vacation day, but made us come in and work a Saturday, or something like that, and they also made us use vacation days during national holidays. I think I ended up with six vacation days for the year, and I couldn't use one of them because there was no one there to cover my classes. There's not much you can do.

Gesh.....anything about a hogwon owner is always shady.
This has been going on since Dave's first started this site back in the 90's!
I, for one would like to read consistent stories about good hokwon owners!
I have come to the conclusion that hakwon owners were born idiots from birth and they think up ways to screw over others while growing up.
Just my rant.
How would these school owners like it if they worked for someone who constantly was screwing them up the yang yang without oil!

Personally, I don't see the big deal. However, I am not in your shoes, so I don't know how your school is set up. If it is something you want to make an issue out of, I would shove in their face and not show up for the next two days. Say, "There, you can now take the 2 days".

Even if you negotiate with them, they think in the end you will give up.

I'm not really sure what the big deal is. I've worked for US Universities in the past, and while I accrued numerous vacation days over the year, and could use them at my discretion, on days that my department was closed during University breaks, I had to take vacation time.

If your school is closed on those two days, then you should have to take vacation in order to get paid on those days.

Hagwons-for profit. P.S.'s- just another class. Took me 2 HORRIBLE hawgs to figure that out. My best bud here makes 3.5, works for SMOE and loves it. Been here 9 years and told my dumbness, " Never work for a hagwon, unless you own it." I listen now.

I don't agree. The owner is not trying to take anything away from you (so far Wink ). Put yourself in his/her shoes... and remember a hogwan is primarily a business.

There are cultural expectations of which you are probably not aware. Even in the public school system, one cannot just pick 'any time' to take holidays.

Negotiation is key... and you are fortunate ot have broached the subject with your employer well in advance. I've seen many people (both public and private) get screwed re: holidays because of Ks' 'expectations'.

Extract a promise from the employer (as to exact dates)... and get it in writing. When he/she trys to tell you (usually the day before you're going to leave) you cannot go on holiday, you hold up the paper and ask them what's written on it... in K-land memory is fleeting. Wink

If it's a hagwan, consider yourself lucky to get ANY paid holidays.

Most of them promise the moon, but when it comes time ....oh can you teach extra class that time?

Good luck.
