JUST HAVE TO RANT:

I've been patient for so long, but finally I have to spill the beans.

hey anyone who is planning to teach in Incheon, this province is one of the worst places to teach.

Well actually the schools and the co teachers might be okay BUT the INCHEON OFFICES are horrible. They are plain BITCHES. They're here to ruin your life. It's frustrating that they are not there to help you but to create constant frustration. I think I've aged ten more years.

EXAMPLE
if the school is out for a three day or four day weekend that native teacher has to use their vacation days to replace those days you were gone. WTF

I've been dealing with this shit since last year, it just pisses me off. If I don't want to use my vacation days what am I suppose to do? The fucken school is going to be closed. URGHHHHH

does anyone else have this shady problem with the office???

Thanks for the heads up. I tend to like to work more closely with my school and tend to ignore Kyoyukcheongs( offices of Education). My overall experiences working with Chanhaksa's(Supervisers) is they are totally bogged down with paperwork and would prefer we work out our own problems for ourselves.

Demanding they follow the word of the contract almost always backfires.
When it comes to holidays I just ask when the camps are and plan my vacation around them. I don't make any strong demands and never bring in the high brass.

How did the office get involved in the first place?

I have to disagree, I taught in Incheon and didn't have any problem. While I have no idea what your personal situation is or the issues leading up to where you are now, I didn't have those same problems. Making statements like that about staff members is really off base and your mouth is likely going to get you fired. Maybe that's what you want. Best of luck to you.

No one can use you unless you let them. Tell them NO!
Do your korean peers have to?
Make up lost work days having to use your vacation time is....makes no sense!
Stand your ground. I don't think there is a law in korea that states you have to use your vacation time to make up days! Nor anywhere for that matter.

Ummm, that would be by contacting them through one of the common methods of communication teachers use these days, either by e-mail, phone, or supposedly through the school.

Is Incheon really a province? I thought it was part of Gyeonggi-do.

Does your contract state you must use your vacation days for the school's day off? If not, tell them that. If they don't agree, take them to the labor board.

Agreed. You should slander Incheon because it's an armpit. I heard this conversation at one of my postings: "Why do we have to stay at such crappy hotels?" "Well, you think they put airports in the best part of the city?"

Province was the wrong word. It's a special administrative zone though and doesn't 'count' as part of Gyeonggi-do. Seoul, which is in the middle of Gyeongi, is also it's own special zone. As are Gwangju, Daegu, Daejon, Busan and Ulsan. They have their own local governments and systems separate to the provinces they are located in.

OK class, in the west, we call Incheon and Seoul cities. lol. adminiatrative zone, jesus. Yes, they have their own governemnts, like all western cities. A government is an administration.

I guess "all western cities" refer to all cities where YOU are from, not where EVERY foreigner is from. Often the largest city in a region is the centre (center) of government for the region, not separate from it in western countries. That may not be the case where YOU are from, or in Korea, but it is for a lot of us.

I apologise if the term "administrative zone" was upsetting, even more so if you didn't realize that these are not the norm everywhere. Hopefully you've been enlightened.

Posting the name and location of your school would be better. You are lumping every school in Incheon in one big pile. I've worked in Incheon for 9 plus years. I don't have nor have ever had the problems your are describing. I also started up my own hogwon and we wouldn't even think of asking our teachers to use public holidays as vacation time. I kinda resent you implying that I would. Evil or Very Mad
