This actually sounds kind of entertaining. As bad as Canseco probably is at MMA, I'm actually expecting him to win. I've written Choi off completely

Jose Canseco used his muscles to take pitchers deep and trade blows with Danny Bonaduce.
Now the former MVP will step onto the mat and try MMA.
In his latest attempt to cash in on his flagging post-baseball career, Canseco is set to make his mixed martial arts debut on May 26 in Japan. The former Oakland A's slugger and tell-all author is fighting South Korean Hong Man Choi on the Dream 9 card in Yokohama Arena.
Choi is a 7-foot-2, 330-pound super heavyweight and has a 1-2 record in MMA.
"I have no idea if I can do it," Canseco said Thursday night. "It's a tough sport."
Canseco has written two books, starred in a pair of reality shows, and had two celebrity boxing bouts since his 17-year baseball career ended. He boxed Bonaduce, a former "Partridge Family" child star, to a majority draw in a match in January. Canseco was listed at 6-4 and 260 pounds for that exhibition bout that featured only three, 1-minute rounds.
Canseco, who named names of alleged steroid abusers like himself in his two books, lost to former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema in his first foray into celebrity boxing.
Canseco's girlfriend, Heidi Northcott, said the MMA deal was presented to Canseco about two weeks ago. The 1988 AL MVP is part of a card that includes an eight-man open-weight tournament and is being called the Super Hulk Tournament.
By his acknowledgment, the baseball outcast needs the money. It's one reason why Canseco has accepted a wide variety of offbeat jobs to make ends meet.

Canseco has no place to be in MMA....
But Hong Man Choi? Give the guy some credit, he's got an impressive kickboxing record (12-5), fighting the likes of Semmy Schilt (win), Gary Goodridge (win), and Jerome LeBanner (loss). Not to mention his fights in MMA, where his two most recent losses are from Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko CroCop. Hell, HMC lasted longer against Fedor than Andrei Arlovski or Tim Sylvia... I expect HMC to dismantle Canseco in an orderly and brutal fashion. |

Canseco is going to get his arse kicked. I'm sure of it. Just as sure as I was that Hong Man was going to lose quickly to Fedor. Hong Man will get on top of him just like he did to Fedor, only this time he'll be fighting a guy who sucks at MMA! Or he knees Canseco in the face and knocks him out. This is a no win for Canseco. I hope he's getting paid a lot of money.
And to think that at one time I thought my autographed Canseco baseball was going to be worth something some day.... |

Fair enough. I saw Hong Man at 7-11 in Itaewon once. He's bigger than I realized.
I feel you on the autographed baseball. I don't know how people go from superstardom to washed up used to be so quickly. The fortunes they waste are appalling. The tyson documentary is a good case of that. |

The sheer physics alone help CHM.
Canseco is old, the roids have probably worn off, and he's almost a foot shorter
It doesn't matter how poor a fighter CHM is, Canseco lost to Vai Sikkhema (eagels punt returner) and tied a former member of the partidge family at boxing. |

Anyone that seriously things Canseco can win and is willing to put some money down on that, I'm game... The dude couldn't even KO Danny Bonaduce in a celebrity boxing match. He was KO'd by Sikahema, an ex-NFL player who was much smaller than him.
Canseco is going to get destroyed. The man is fighting for the money. I wonder how much he is getting KO'd inside of a round. I wonder what the over/ under is on the number of punches it will take for Jose to go down for good. |

Well, performance-enhancing drugs have been known to work wonders - and they are notoriously lax about testing for drugs in MMA promotions in Japan (which is why most Pride fighters haven't looked as impressive in UFC - except for "Rampage", who was probably not doing steroids...) |

those drugs are not going to help his chin when a 330lb professional kickboxer lands whatever he wants. not to mention Choi is likely taking steroids anyway. unbelievable match up. |

While that is the case for some of the fighters: Paulo Filho and most recently Allistair Overeem, other fighters like Nog and Wanderlei just had injuries and repeated beatings take their toll on them. For others like Cro-Cop, he just couldn't handle the cage and was exposed pretty badly. We won't really know about Shogun until he is fully recovered from his knee injury. |

Frankly I think this is quite sad. Regardless of whether CHM can win or not, to me the guy has been taken advantage of as a novelty fighter by gung ho "Dae Han Min Guk" promoters.
He seems half retarded at this point, and considering he had some kind of brain surgery not long ago, obviously can't fight, and his only claim to fame is being so damn big, I don't know why he continues to allow himself to be used as a circus spectacle. If his managers had any true interest in him as a person, they would find him a nice cushy commentator job ringside and allow the man to save himself at least a small amount of dignity.
I hope he wins in the hope that he wants to end his fighting career (if we could call it that) on a positive before hanging up the gloves. |

I think that if he had a great trainer like Freddy Roach and dedicated himself fully to kickboxing (which he would have to do to retain Roach as a trainer) I think that Choi would be very hard for anyone to beat.
Not at all likely to happen at this point, though - he seems to be too distracted (and maybe too goofy...) |
