|
|
I was comparing the EPIK invitation for March 09 and September 09 and i noticed that for the september contract, the number of vacation days and sick days have decreased (21 down to 18 and 15 to 11, respectively). Do they change details concerning the contract often? |

It's 11 sick days. Teacher who've been here say it was 15 up until the 2009 contracts came out. Why decreased benefits?
Also, the Summer and Winter camps are said to not be paying anymore this year like local veteran teachers said they did last year and the years before where you get 30,000 won an hour on top of your salary. Only exception is if the camp work is after 5PM or before 9AM as in the over nighters they're talking about for this Summer.
What gives? Lower pay and benefits than those in years past yet the Won is weaker than then. I feel poorer than I had hoped to be. |

Reduced days off, no paid camps. EPIK thinks they are the shit because they are getting all these unemployed NAs. They get shit, that's about all.
Have fun anyone dumb enough to sign. Last year I made 46M including housing. This year it would be 37M. That's too much cut for me. I'm gone. |

How exactly did you manage to make 46 million won in a year? Are you an F2, are you doing privates? |

There's another thread espousing the virtues of using up ALL your sick days because, as some posters put it, Koreans f*** us over, so we deserve it.
The administration is probably noticing that WAY to many waygookins are abusing the system, and this is their response to it. It's probably heading towards 5 days, like some hagwons.
In my opinion, 21 sick days is completely unnecessary. It's not Korea's responsibility to care for the sick of other countries'. 11 is still very generous. It's 11 more days than I get.
A good compromise might be: 5 paid sick days and 16 unpaid. I wonder how many people would be maxing out then?

Not sure if they change it often, but in regards to sick days, who really cares? I mean, how many sick days do you usually take in a year?
I don't want to come across as a poster boy for EPIK, but it seems whenever someone posts something about EPIK, that's a cue for all the bitterness to come out.
I doubt EPIK factors in things like the depreciation of the Korean Won considering that EPIK workers are living in Korea, why should they care that you send money home? Sure, they capped the flight cost but still for many that still means a free flight.
For newbies, or for those with a major that is quite far removed from a education/English major, EPIK ain't so bad. If you've been here a while, have upgraded your qualifications, well you're just plain stupid earning not much with EPIK. Don't blame EPIK, blame yourself. |

It's with housing.
Housing is 4M
Base *12 is 30M
camps *2 is 5M
after-school is 4M
severance is 3M
They killed camps and my after-school, so next year I'd be down 9M. No way. I'm gone. |

Just posting the number of days is misleading.
I am on the old old contract till this August. 14 WORKING days vacation. 15 CALENDAR days sick leave.
The new guy at my school has the current contract. 21 CALENDAR days vacation. 11 WORKING days sick leave.
The new contract will have the same sick leave but you must provide a doctors cert after 3 days not 7. The vacation days are 18 WORKING days.
Scrapping decent extra pay for camps sucks, and so will the camps. |

The 'standard' EPIK contract changes twice a year.
In K-land (where everything you know is wrong ) the Sept. 2009 contract provides 18 working days, which is actually more vacation than the March 2009 which provides 21 calendar days.
Yes, they 'wacked out' four sick days. |

Yes it is... when a requirement for an E-2 visa is a medical exam, and premiums are paid for National Health Insurance. |

Health care yes because we have insurance. Paying out wages to chronically ill people, no. |

here is one prime example why deutsch was wrong in his article.
i remember reading a story about the low funding in american education, this was years ago, and in the article it used the example of a teacher going to the local store and buying materials for her students with her own money.
that is a mark of a good teacher and someone who is qualified to teach. she wanted to make sure her students got what they needed so she sacrificed for them.
the above is 'all about me' and that is not what a teacher is no matter how many diplomas are on his/her wall. |

So having self worth issues makes someone a good teacher. People who work for small pay are either desperate, or possibly don't value themselves. |

you are SO absolutely correct!!
and that's why hands down, foreign teachers are so much better than the locals here in Korea - because we have come all the way from our home countries to teach the poor, downtrodden, K masses who sorely lack the qualified teachers themselves to ever become competent in English all by themselves.
