|
|
Recently I've read several threads in which a Western English teacher will take offense at another post and accuse the poster of being "Korean" or a "Gyopo", and thus apparantely try to render the offending person's post null and void.
I've even seen the same posts against other Asian posters such as Panda, who is not even a Korean by blood, birth or upbringing. The mere fact that they're not from one of the 7 "holy" "english" nations makes their opinions invalid, apparantely.
I find this issue somewhat disturbing and somewhat indicative of some of the kind of people that post on this board.
I'm of the opinion that this board needs a lot more Korean and Gyopo posters. It also needs a hell of a lot more people who experience English from the customer end of things. I'd love to see business men, university students or even high school students (this board is rated for 13+) talking about THEIR experiences on the studying end of ESL. I bet they could give a hell of a lot more teaching tips through just their experiences than half the posters on this board. It'd also be awesome to hear about the Korean side of the co-teaching experience. We've heard plenty of negative stories from the Westerners side, but I bet there are just as many from the qualified Korean techers side too.
I think it's not just a cop-out to complain about Korean posters here, but a cowardly narcissistic cop-out. The ESL 'thing' is made up of more than just the native speaker side. I look forward, and hope for, more Korean posters, and more posters from America, Europe, Asia or even Africa who've learned English as a second language and are currently in Korea, or have experience of studying it here.
I look forward to an end of snarky replies on this board which say "You're a gyopo" or "You're a Korean" to someone's perfectly valid comment. Especially since recently so many comments have been targetted at people who turn out to be a white man or a Chinese girl or some other person who is NOT a Korean by blood, birth, ancestory or nationality. It's inexcusable to ignore someones comment because of their presumed race or nationality. The only amusing thing about it is how often certain posters have been WRONG recently after accusing someone of being a Korean when in fact they were not.
I've included a poll above so that you can scream your opinions with a mere click. I'm looking forward to replies too though. Especially from the Korean-haters who seem quite prominent lately. (VI?) |

I voted the first option, let them post. It's just the internet after all. People will say what they want to say, sensitive people need not apply. |

I don't mind anyone posting, but I don't want to argue with someone who can't hold up an intelligent conversation.
Some people on this site don't argue intelligently, but almost all are capable of doing it if they put their mind to it. |

Daveseslcafe is not the place for anything serious...seriously.
It is more wretched and vile than Itaewon, stupider than a bus full of special ed students, and as classy as a crack ho with a tramp stamp of elvis above her ass crack. |

I don't mind Koreans or gyopos definding some of the anti-Korean remarks. Cause let's be real, there is a lot of stupid stuff said on these forums.
But sometimes a Korean/gyopos level of defence border on irrationalism. A love for culture and country that leaves absolutely no room for dissent.
Like I said I don't mind them defending some of the things said. Just as long as they're willing to keep it real and accept the fact that there are some pretty f-cked up thing about this country and it's culture. |

In response I just always choose the most xenophobic answer.
And, not only should it ONLY be westerners, but if you fail he 'Aryan Test' you cant post either. As your genes are inferior. |

Is this a joke?? More Koreans on this site...
Koreans are easily offended and have very thin skin, this board would turn into more of a farce then it currently is now.
Plus how exactly are the mods supposed to go about encouraging Koreans o frequent a board that more-or-less bashes Korea from every conceivable angle and issue? |

Dave's is becoming less of a place to come and express one's frustrations and more of a place to discuss how to use hangeul
there was a time when all posts written in Korean were deleted by mods; these days Koreans are mods
this used to be a place to come as a refuge from Korea and Koreans, to talk with other waygook teachers about whatever's on one's mind, and if it was a bad day, or if something in this country struck one as funny or absurd, one could express it openly and freely |

actually, i think it's the reverse. every gyopo i've met speaks and understands proper english a hell of a lot better than most esl "teachers" here. probably the reason why most gyopos make bank here teaching english. most fellow foreigners i've met teaching english here...really should not be teaching at all...to be honest. |
