I was watching the Korean news and they had a story about it being unavailable at pharmacies. That's good since the stockpile in Korea can't provide for everyone in the country.
Will it be available anywhere, or will they be sensible and only distribute it to ill people from hospitals. If it is supplied at pharmacies I don't want to be the last in line on a Tamiflu run.
Hopefully no one needs it, but who really knows. |

Just saw a show on this.
First in line are doctors and health care professionals, as well as gov't people considered important enough.
Foreigners would be bottom on the list, for sure. |

If you showed up right now with flu like symptoms at any of the government clinics, you can bet your last won that you'll get Tamiflu. |

That's what I figure, but I'm just wondering if there's going to be a run on buying it at pharmacies just so it can expire in medicine cabinets of people who don't need it. |

I wouldn't worry about that happening. All Koreans know that kimchi cures the flu.

And what will you do when the virus mutates because everyone is (unnecessarily) taking tamiflu?
At the moment the fatality rate is 1/10!
What we have to fear is when the virus comes back stronger because all these frightened fucks take antibiotics when they get a sniffle.
There are flu strains that exist right now entirely because of people abusing antibiotics... |

1 in 10 you got some sources for that?
plus it isn't an antibotic. tamiflu is an antiviral. Resistance can develop but it is much much less likely. The part of the virus which it targets is very stable and any mutations in at area result in a much less fit virus |

I think he's taking it from the aprox. 1700 cases recorded in Mexico and the 165-ish people who have died as a result. The stats may not bre accurate though, as there are possibly many cases that cleared up before being identified as h1n1. NZ has had about 100 suspected cases and no fatals yet (knock on wood). The states has had 300+ cases and one death up to this point. |

Yup. 1/10 just saw it on CNN and FOX. they were comparing it to the bird flu which had a 4/10 fatality rate. If you take the number of people infected and then look at the number of fatalities thus far it is pretty obvious.
Sorry I don't have a link because (as another poster said) I can't link you to my eyes.
As for the viral thing, i stand corrected. I still don't think it is good to go overboard on any kind of medication until it is proven you have it. |

I agree. Tamiflu is also not cheap. Panic buying of drugs and masks, killing thousands of pigs, etc, etc is a sign of just how ignorant much of the world is (including those of us from so-called "advanced" countries.)
Surgical masks, for instance do not protect from the virus as the virus is smaller than the pores of the mask, yet the Mexican Army has been handing them out to citizens. The masks are sold out in every medical supply store here in Houston. The masks do perhaps prevent you from touching your nose and mouth, but they are of marginal, if any use. Egypt is killing their entire pig population, even though this strain of Mexican flu virus has never been found in pigs! They also haven't even had a case within their borders. Ignorance at its zenith!
Asia, including and especially Korea, has actually been the smartest in this crisis with their proactive immigration screenings, quarantine procedures, etc. The EU comes a close second. Perhaps the most irresponsible country in this mess has been the United States. Out of fear of offending the large hispanic voting block, the US government didn't even have doctors screening passengers from inbound flights from infected areas! There has been no screening on the border. No tightening of entry requirements.
Japan, for example, suspended the visa waiver program with Mexico until this thing ends. The US has done nothing. I am embarrassed that my country is more concerned about political correctness than protecting its citizens. |

Another thing people seem to be forgetting is that Tamiflu is a prescription medication. You can't just walk into a pharmacy and say, "I wanted a months supply of Tamiflu please." Also, if I remember correctly, by taking it preemptively, you can actually decrease the effect of the drug if you were to get the flu. |

How are prescriptions handled, though? They only have so many doses in the country, and I'm just wondering if the KCDC is going to hold them in a strategic plan or release the stockpile on demand. It's quite easy to get prescriptions of stuff if you know your doctor well.

I don't know how they are handling it right now, but a few years ago I came down with the flu and was prescribed Tamiflu. The only reason I was given the drug was that (according to the doctor) that the diagnoses was made within 48 hours, which is why it was so effective in knocking out the virus. This was the one and only time I went to Severance Hospital and I saw a Canadian doctor. The medication was VERY expensive even with insurance. |
