I think Mises is basically right here, ManintheMiddle. I have seen both sides attack the other, complaining that the other dominates the media. This goes way back in American history. |

| That's not how I remember it. I remember Bush getting monstrously high approval ratings for simply being our Head of State after 9-11. |
I see. Revealing choice of adjective there. Part of the support was patriotic but much was due to his decisive action, something found wanting in the Katrina aftermath.
But of course neither of you would bother to blame the inept Louisiana governor at the time, a Democrat, for her initially slow response. |
Generally, I find it unnecessary to put words in others' mouths when just asking them what they think will do fine.
I don't think Bush can be absolved from Katrina simply because Louisiana and the City of New Orleans also managed poorly. And after all, I'm not certain about this, but weren't the levees under the control of a Federal agency? |

Do you mean those which were the subject of the Army Corps of Engineers report which found the levees were in need of reinforcements, followed by Bush insteaad DECREASING the budget for doing so? |

| No, in 50 years your grandkid is going to say, "Hey Grandpa! What is a Republican? Are they the ones who wore silly mustasches, gave funny salutes and ran the economy into the ground?" |
Normally I wouldn't deign to respond to one of your snide remarks but this one is deserving of its very own response. Not only is it entirely unjustifiable but really beyond the pale, even for you. To equate the Republican Party (of which I am not a member) with Nazism is intellectually lazy at best and onerous to the point of disgusting at worst.
You can't very well expect me and many others here to take you seriously when you make a remark like this. Even if made half in jest, the fact that you equate the two in your mind even in passing speaks volumes.
But, alas, you're not alone. Much of the Left has the same sentiment. And of course we know that there are no extremists on the Left. |
Get with the times, boy. This is the 21st Century. There is no Godwin's Law anymore. Your Glenn Beck killed it. |

The reality of the media:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/191393/
| Quote: |
By definition, establishments believe in propping up the existing order. Members of the ruling class have a vested interest in keeping things pretty much the way they are. Safeguarding the status quo, protecting traditional institutions, can be healthy and useful, stabilizing and reassuring.
...
"If you are of the establishment persuasion (and I am) . . ." |
Neither left nor right. Rather, they are just another set of interests with a vested interest in a lack of meaningful reform. They defend the system.
And the peasants (I'm stealing from Taibbi here) are given a set of distractions to keep them from seeing the giant beast screwing them over. The "culture wars" are one such distraction, in the US. In Canada, the distraction is the US. In Korea, it is Dukdo. And so on.
But please, let us not pretend that "the media" has any ideology aside from the survival of the state in her exact current form as a bias. |

Ya-ta Boy: your position is hollow and transparently hypocritical. Where were you when Naomi Wolf was calling the W. Bush administration fascist, arguing that it was going to bring us under a Nazi-like dictatorship?
The more I read you here, the more I see you as a simplistic, sneering, following-the-leader partisan hack.
________
I would not go that far, Mises. Many extremely partisan, extremely self-righteous snobs, on the right and the left, use the media for their neverending crusades against the other side... |

Isn't that like two guys yelling at each other with actual anger over which athletic team is 'better' etc? |

Naomi Wolf has a nationally televised TV show? That's news to me. |

Well, she was on quite a few national tv shows.
When the right is in power, the left worries about fascism. When the left is in power, the right worries about socialism. But America just keeps plodding along with a much less interesting course.
When Harper was elected some of my undergrad friends from years past (socialist hippies to the last - but nice folks) started sending me forwards and mass emails about how abortion was about to be criminalized, the CBC privatized (sold to Fox, no doubt) and the rest. The reality has just been boring. |
