Well I don't get why they need to have so many of the PSA-breaks.

If an American show is shown on a regular British TV channel there will be ONE commercial break in the middle. Not credits, commercial break, a few minutes of show, commercial break, a few more minutes of show, commercial break, the end of the show, commercial break then the final credits.

AFN could adapt that model then the show wouldn't be quite so destroyed by commercials and they'd still get all their PSAs in. One PSA break in the middle is surely enough since they're not actually selling anything. I guess if you're used to the non-stop interruptions already it doesn't matter much though..

Okay, here's the real reason PSAs (Public Service Announcements) are inserted into AFN programming. The only justifiable reason (according to the US Congress and the Department of Defesnse) to provide US militaty personnel with quasi-current TV programs is Information. (What many would call "propaganda.") And since those sitcoms are made to accommodate four to six minutes of commercial advertising, why not use those dramatic breaks to insert information/propaganda?

Granted, some of those PSAs are indeed propaganda, but some of them are indeed useful information for US service people, and even for non-military expats (e.g., how to blend in with the locals, the impotance of going the extra mile if one wants to be accepted, etc.).

So, just chill. Treat the PSAs like you treat commercials. An opportunity to get another beer, to feed the dog, whatever.

But really, get over it. Those PSAs are the entire legal justification for AFN's existence.

P.S. I speak as someone who spent a good part of his US military career working for regional manifestations of AFN. In this case, I actually know what I'm talking about. That is, this is not my opinion - this is fact. Check it out.

I've two questions for you:
  1. What law and/or regulations support your assertion regarding the only purpose of AFN?
  2. Could you provide an example of one of the spots that you "grant is propoganda?"

1. Google it. (AFRTS regulation)
2. Since I haven't watched AFN for more than 10 years, I can't, but if we take Wiki's definition of propaganda as the disseminition of information designed to influence opinion and behavior, we could apply the term to virtually all the spots I ever saw and/or produced. Propaganda doesn't have to be false to qualify.

You made the bald assertion as though it's "from on the mount." You provide backup for your scribblings.

I grew up on AFN (ages 4-Cool when my dad was in the AF in Germany.
I LOVE the PSA's. In place of the cereal and GI Joe ads other people in my generation get nostalgic about, I had "No, you can't mail explosives!" and "Don't shop when you're hungry. No, no no." Even so, for those years I LONGED for advertising and, upon arriving in the US, would often channel surf for interesting advertisements. Granted, the novelty wore off after a couple months. I am grateful that I even had my PSA's. It was important to me then. For God's sake, won't anybody PLEASE think of the children!?!?

Besides, a friend of mine said they had ads about not committing suicide (because, you know, being in the military sometimes sucks). That seems helpful.

Then again, they could always switch to the same advertising methods as HULU.
