Desultude, why are you so fussy

There are several reasons why we eat- for taste, for health, to fill up, to entertain ourselves.

Unless you are just interested in filling your stomach, It makes sense to be "fussy".

Lets just stay with peanut butter. Its a really tasty, healthy food. Its also a convenient source of protein. But the corporate producers started adding hydrogenated fats and corn sugar because by volume it is cheaper than peanuts. The fats are unhealthy, the fats and sugar make you fat. If you have not become inured to sugar in all of your food (read the labels on processed food), peanut butter with sugar and hydrogenated fat fillers doesn't taste good. Hydrogenated fats are not good for your heart.

So- peanut butter that tastes like peanuts, gives you a good source of proteins and fats, and doesn't spike your blood sugar an hour after you eat it (which contributes to diabetes) or:

peanut butter that is too sweet, has unhealthy fats, so contributes to heart disease and diabetes, and obesity.

Why be so fussy? My only real answer is how can you not care what you put in your body? Just look at the bodies on all of those Americans that are not fussy.

Do they have beaver tail? Or moose shanks?

I'd even settle for some Shredded Wheat.

Shredded Wheat is dope. And as Canadian as Kraft Dinner.

I love Canada and Canadians- love the mountains, love the hockey, and really love the more socially focussed politics and policies. But I will never forget the first time I had "sugar pie"- ugh! I can only think of canadian bacon as a culinary contribution. Am I missing something?

When I lived in Fairbanks, Ak., we got a moose one fall. We were really excited, until we started eating it. Three months in, my daughter would cry at the sight of another moose meal. I was tempted to leave the freezer (which was outside) unlocked for the bears to raid. Even they must have been tired of moose- they broke into my neighbor's freezer, which was full of carabou and salmon, but skipped ours! One of the lessons about killing an animal- you have to be prepared to eat it- the whole thing.

Umm, what's sugar pie? It sounds like a dentist's worst nightmare.

That site just remeinded me that I really don't miss much in the way of food here.

I'm not sure what the real name is- I think it is the same as something in the south of the U.S call "shoo-fly pie." It seems to be made of sugar and eggs, and I'm not sure about egg part. A good, lard or butter crust with sugar-ness on top. It does make my teeth hurt to think of it.

desultude:

I buy dried garbanzo beans at a Moslem store very close to Whatthebook? in Itaewon. They are relatively cheap and keep just fine till I need them. Just soak 'em for a few hours, then cook for about 30 min. before I use them.

You can also ask the guy at grocerymall.net to find things for you. He's very helpful.

good luck

Thanks. I'll see if there is a Moslem store here in Daegu, as they would have other middle eastern foods I like also. For now I am going to order from Bobs Red Mill- the place Maxx recommended.

Now if I could only find fresh limes in Daegu. . .

You could have a Korean friend help you order from www.ilovecookie.com

They have all kinds of good stuff and deliver all over Korea. I've heard good things about the site but have never tried it myself.

Those online Korean stores are WEAK. You can get stuff cheaper if you just have someone ship a box from home via ground.

Seriously. A bottle of maple syrup for W19,000? Give me strength...
