OK, in Korea I loved this drink called cheong ha 청하 (it's an old way of saying "pure water" or "clear stream" or something). It comes in little green bottles, so it looks like soju, but it's not soju! It's a rice wine, like sake, but lighter, really wonderful stuff. I've been looking for it in the States, but none of the Korean package stores have heard of it, though I found it all over the place in Korea. I'm trying to see if I can find it online, but all my searches turn up nothing so now I'm thinking I might have the name wrong.
Has anyone else tried this beverage? Am I spelling it correctly? |

Yeah, I drink it sometimes, especially with fish. It's like a very sweet factory-made sake. Not bad stuff & goes down easily. My Korean friends consider it a bit girly. |

I'm having the damnedest time finding this stuff in America, but I want to show my friends how I lived in Korea. Does anybody know any good websites for ordering rare imported foodstuffs in America? |

It's rice wine, so of course it tastes very similar, probably the same ingredients and process, but it's Korean. If I were really dying for a substitute I would just drink sake. But I want to treat my friends to a Korean meal like what I enjoyed there, and this would be not only a nice authentic touch, but a big nostalgia thing for me as well. |

Is this better than soju? Is it a more natural alcohol? Is it a crappy low quality chemical brew, but just different than soju? If it's natural old fashioned brew, where do you buy it in Korea? |

it's crap. i've only seen one brand, unlike the amazing variety of 3-4 brands of soju you see on the shelf. one brand = bad news (unless it's daedonggang) |

To each his own, I guess. But I always found cheongju/cheongha to be better than soju. Soju is made from wheat or other grains, or sometimes root vegetables, and tastes just like really bottom tier vodka to me. It's even got that rainbow sheen to it, like an oil slick in a shot glass. |

oh i agree, i like it better than soju. but there's no reason to drink cheongha when you can easily find japanese sake in america. hell, even give the japanese sho-chus a try, you might be surprised. |

My ex-husband said a long time ago that Cheongha is Korean made Japanese Sake.

Yes, I understand that it's basically the same thing. I just wondered if that brand could be had this side of the pond. I guess I'll just have to settle for sake. |
