Why do people feel the need to spring these on me, an unsuspecting wanna-be teacher? I respect the idea that they separate the wheat from the chaff, I just hate the idea that I am given no prep time for them.

GAH!
I'm going to have to ask for more job leads me thinks. Crying or Very sad

DAMN DAMN DAMN

Since you get no prep time, you might offer a 'free talking class' and begin with something along the lines of:

I hear Japan has just passed a law changing its name to Aardvark and will be listed first in everything. What do you think about that?

LOL Are you being serious?

OK, the hagwan that sprung this on me was for children. While I'm sure they could tell me why Japan sucks, not sure if it'd be original thinking on their part, or if they could tell me why. Smile
Anyways, is this normal behavior, to spring a practice lesson on an interviewee?

Very good idea. Works well as it seems ESL only covers a certain number of topics.

Do you also emit sunlight from your fundamental canal?

It's only happened once to me. I had to give a demo to the interviewing committee. I have heard several people say they have to send in a taped lesson.

Since it seems to be happening to you often enough (and once is plenty often enough in my book) to be an irritant, I can only suggest you go to each interview with a demo lesson already prepared.

(In my current job I had to do a demo AFTER I was hired. Later I asked what would have happened if I had done poorly in the demo. I didn't get an answer because they didn't understand 'would have happened'. )

That's not nice. I think there's no harm in being over prepared. I'm finding trial by fire doesn't seem to work if I want to teach at a hagwan in Kangnam.

Better to be little bunged up than have your brand of verbal diarrhea.

New Zealand has brands of diarrhea? *beep*, you guys have everything. . .

As for oral spincter Hershey squirting, I'd like to point out that you average over twenty posts a day, and my average is only over 2.

Unless you gargle my guess is you have oral equivalent of a baboon's ass.

Don't sweat it, Katydid- they just want to make sure that you're not a sociopath or an utter moron around kids and yes, for the school in question (if my assumption is correct) they do ask for a 'demonstration' of your ability to manage a classroom whenever possible (past experience has shown them that this sort of screening is neccessary), but they will also pay you for it too. Of course the catch (for the school) is that they can only see demos from people already in Korea...
