|
|
I've noticed that there are tons of people from the Middle East living in Korea. They look like they're from India but I can't be sure. Are they here on business? It surprised me, because I thought that South Korea was pretty strict on immigration. So where are they from and what brings them to South Korea? |

So if a country is strict on immigration you'll never see middle eastern people living there? I noticed you were a little racist. I thought a certain level of intelligence was required to find other countries on a map. How did you get to Korea did someone point it out to you? |

Sorry if I came off racist. I was just wondering what brought them to Korea. It seems that people here from the Western world are mostly teachers or soldiers, I was wondering what occupations people from the middle east are in. |

India is not part of the Middle East. It's part of South Asia.
In answer to your question, there are people from India here and Pakistanis who are part of South Asia.
As far as people from the Middle East, from what I can gather they're mainly from Morroco or Iraq. There are a few from places like Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. That's my speculation.
I don't know what they all do. I know a guy from Lebanon who is doing graduate work over here. Another guy owns a restaurant. You have people who work in major Korean companies as professionals, who attend universities, and some have restaurants. They are here legally
in most cases, I believe. Anyway, there may be more illegal foreign teachers than Middle Eastern folks illegaly.

I've met some sailors from Sri Lanka and Lebanon as well as from Pakistan if that gives you an idea of occupations. But that is because Busan is a huge port, 5th in the world if I'm not mistaken. |

My school teaches English (and sometimes Korean) to about 5 or 6 Muslim women from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and a few other Middle Eastern countries. We also have a couple of Saudi kids that we teach. They are in Seoul because their husbands/fathers are working as engineers for a gas company (GS I think). Obviously that doesn't cover everyone, but there's a reasonable size group of Middle Eastern people living in Gangnam-Gu for this reason. |

If his logic for why there shouldn't be many middle eastern people in a country is because he thought the country had strict immigration control, yeah. It sounds like a racist question.
if he wasn't trying to be racist that's fine, but when you write that kind of sentence you should think about how it sounds. |

In the case of Middle Eastern folks here, I believe there is a mix of diplomats, business owners and some for the big companies. There also a fair amount of students from the Middle East and south Asia.
Here's a stat: there are almost 200,000 Muslims living in Korea, and there is a new Muslim elementary school which is supposed to be built. |
