A nearly final version of Microsoft's next OS will be available from the company's Web site beginning May 5.

Windows 7 RC will function until June 1, 2010. After that, users will need to upgrade to a full, paid version of the operating system.

Meh.

I will wait for retail.

I have build 7100 on my hard drive and a key for the RC from MS but I won't be installing anytime soon. I am looking forward to Windows 7, but I can wait. Vista is doing well.

I already got the leaked 7100 and I'm loving it.

Lots faster and less intrusive than Vista IMO.

For those of you who are still using XP.
Quote:
As promised, Microsoft Corp. today launched the beta of "XP Mode," the Windows 7 compatibility add-on that runs Windows XP applications in a virtual machine.

XP Mode followed hard on the heels of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC), the public preview that went live just before midnight Monday.

Introduced two weeks ago, XP Mode creates a virtual environment using Virtual PC, Microsoft's client virtualization technology, then stuffs it with a pre-activated licensed copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), the most-current version of the eight-year-old operating system.

installed it tonight. Expect it to take around 3 hours for an upgrade, but if you are using vista- you get to keep all of your files. Very nice.

I installed it a few days ago on a virtual P.C. in Virtualbox, and it runs rather well. Unlike the beta, it absolutely refuses to boot with only 128MB R.A.M. It boots with 256MB, but is a bit sluggish. When I give it 512MB of RAM, it boots rather quickly, though that's on a nearly clean install, so it's not necessarily an indicator of how well it will run after people install tons of things on it. 1GB of RAM didn't seem to increase the boot speed at all on my nearly clean configuration.

I'll probably install it on my real hard drive eventually, but Windows obsessed with replacing my bootloader (GRUB) with its own, so I'm procrastinating that.
