I know that this is not exactly on topic, but it is something food related I just saw and found interesting:
A Menu
by tristero
Today, I came across the following menu:
Cucumbers with garlic and fine herbs
Basque chicken thigh with herbs
Red and green bell peppers and olive oil
Couscous
Organic yogurt
Apple
In most parts of the US, that would be described as a gourmet, or near-gourmet meal. In France, it's called government-sponsored school lunch.

Say what you will about the French, but they sure know how to dine! |

I just came back from my lunch, so the guy in our group refused to eat peanut, cucumber in our lunch set.
"Why dont you eat cucumber?" I asked
"Its taste is plain." he said.
I have met many picky eaters in my life, eating with them could be painful sometimes, food they dont eat seems to vary illogically.
Setting aside vegetarians or those who are allergic to some certain food , I have the questions for the rest of you, what food you dont eat and why, and what made you a picky eater, have you ever tried to change yourself? |
Are you conducting research? |

I'm an extremely non-picky eater. I will try anything twice just in case it was prepared incorrectly the first time. However, I am hesitant regarding these sea cucumbers as well as cow brains. I've yet to have the opportunity to try either. I would definitely give it whirl, but no promises as to whether or not I'll like it.
I do love bull fries and cow tongue if prepared correctly.
As I child, I didn't like chicken on the bone because I would see veins. I would only eat the part that looked "normal". I'm finding more and more that gross seeming stuff tend to have a distinctive and enjoyable flavor.
Sorry, I could talk for DAYS about food.

Yeah, when I worked at a French school the lunches were amazing. Spinach salads w/ vinaigrette, stewed chicken, good-looking mushrooms, veg soups, quiches made with stinky cheese....
Korea and France have huge culinary differences. They don't even cook the same (lots of baking/stewing vs lots of boiling/grilling). Yet both countries are intensely proud of their food. And both of them ferment their prize dishes. Just strikes me as odd how they can be so similar yet so different.
Anyway. I'm one of those cilantro-haters, and also can't stand white bread and ddeok. And sugar in coffee or sweet tea.
I don't mind chicken on the bone but the first time I bought a chicken to cook in Korea and saw the attached neck, it made me a bit sick. Guess I'm a little spoiled and picky...I still cleave the neck off and let the dogs have it. |

| I'm just gonna shoot these out as they come to me. Today's lunch menu: Vienna Sausages....NO. I won't even consider it...not even going on the tray. Sausage from a tin = yuck....I may well rather eat a sea cucumber. |

I can't eat chocolate.
No, wait, I wish I couldn't eat chocolate.
Seriously, does everybody like sea snails (Gulpengy or something!).
Just seen one in todays crab and bean-sprout gu.
Last time, I ate it thinking it was something else, nearly boked man.
Had to chew her like a hundred times, before swallowing a mouthful of rice to get it down my throat.
Some things are at the bottom of the sea for a reason: If we were supposed to eat them, we'd walk sideways and have claws. |

Get this. Does it make sense?
I love cucumbers. I love vinegary products. But I HATE pickles!
I love lattes. I love green tea. But I hate green tea lattes.
I love ice cream. I love strawberries. But I absolutely hate strawberry ice cream!
I love blueberries. I love bagels. But it pisses me off when I find blueberries in my bagels.
I'm odd. |

Re: the bagels. Are you a Montrealer? Just wondering.
I'm a bagel purist myself, in the Montreal sense. Montreal bagels, please, either sesame or poppy seed, and hot out of the oven. Yum!
Also, have you ever had actual good quality homemade strawberry ice cream? It's different than the strawberry-flavoured crap. Try some that's not made with added flavour (either natural or artificial, it really doesn't matter), maybe? |

Yes, but I would be willing to consider making an exception for Giada. |

I completely get where Brento's going on the strawberry ice cream and blueberry bagels. If strawberry ice cream tasted like actual fresh picked strawberries instead of some pepto bismol-pink chemical concoction, I'd like it.
I grew up picking blueberries in the late summer, and the ones in packaged baked goods bear little resemblance. I'm at a loss as to what they actually do to the berries to make them that bad. The ones that have beeen in my freezer since last August taste waaaaaaaaaaay better.
As for what I won't eat- there's a local delicacy here that reminds me of phlegm, both in taste and texture, but being vegetarian lets me avoid it neatly. Other than that, I don't enjoy things that are stringy after cooking. |

I hate pickles and mushrooms as well. I nearly throw up when I bite into a pickle. Doesn't matter what kind.
I also hate most beans, especially the big red kind that are all mushy. Barf!
I hate vegetables on pizza, but I like vegetables if they're prepared right (prefer stir fried or in a soup).
I dislike sea snails but I LOVE mountain snails (escargot). |
