I've been using my desktop for 4 years and have generally had no problems with it, except for the power supply going out a few months ago.

I brought my laptop home from work last weekend and plugged my internet cable into the laptop with no problems. I made sure that my laptop's TCP/IP detected the IP address and DNS server address automatically, just like I've done dozens of times before. After I finished my work on the laptop, I put the cable back into my desktop. Since then, I've been unable to access the internet or get any response on the desktop.

The only thing that shows up under Network Connections is the 1394 connection, and not the Local Area Connection. I've tried doing a system restore, unplugging the cable completely, turning off the desktop....and nothing seems to make it work.

However, when I plug the cable back into the notebook, there are no problems at all. Is it possible that the network card is toast?

Could be, or it could be that your cable modem/isp is allowing only one MAC address. Try unplugging the modem, turning off the desktop, connecting the desktop to the modem, then turning the desktop and the modem back on (in that order).

See if that works.

I dont have a modem. The cable plugs into the wall

Trust me, *somewhere* between your computer and the rest of the world there's a modem.

However, now it sounds like the network card my be toast. Do you see anything (like a yellow exclamation point) under the Device Manager?

If you're using XP go to Network and Internet Connections in the control panel and use the New Connection Wizard to make the Local Area Network Connection again.
