Hey everyone,
I'm currently looking for a teaching postion in Korea and have an interview with a school in Guri. Can anyone tell me what life is like in this city? Or direct me to any other posts relating to this city? That would be great!
Thanks

Guri is OK. (That's a capital O and a capital K). It's not downtown Seoul but it has it's own stuff going on. I'd happily live there but I don't. On the offchance that you are absolutely desperate for whores it's not the best place in the world to be. If you're a normal straight or gay person you'll do fine.
(I only mentioned the gay thing because I've met SO MANY gay dudes who live in Guri) |

I have to ask...
As the geographical location is unlikely to have changed, what is it you want? More whores or less gays?

Hey now.. Guri is a great place ;D I live in the market area though.. most teachers live closer to their schools.. which is a lot more neighborhood like areas but the main market is a short 700 won bus ride away.. or 30 min walk. If you happen to live in the market area, then you can just walk out and get just about anything you need easily Guri is also pretty close to Seoul (30 mins to Dongdaemun.. 1-2 hours to Gangnam depending on traffic) so it's not hard to get to wherever you'd probably want to go in Seoul. |

By bicycle maybe...
Take one of the many buses that go to 강변 station and then jump on line 2. 45 minutes tops. |

not even - i can get to gangnam station from guri in about 45 minutes on my bike. it'll take just about an hour if you take the train the whole way (stupid).
also, easy answer to the guri question:
if you're a guy, don't move to guri. if you're a girl, please do. guri is a goddamn sausage party. |

If you take any of the 9 buses (besides 9-3) it'll loop in Guri from Doldari stop. It takes anywhere from 15-45 mins depending on traffic to loop.. then it finally gets out of Guri and onto the highway (Another 10-20 mins?). Then it takes about 20 mins on the train from Gangbyeon to Gangnam. I go in this direction on the 9's b/c a friend lives over in Topyeong-dong so she can catch it too. But with the 1's/15's it'll take about 45-1 hour.
If you catch the 9-3 or 1115-2 which both don't by often.. and on the weekends they're very very rare (multiple times I've waited from 40 mins - 1 hour when there was traffic).... it's a lot faster (45 mins as well).
u have to remember if you're biking or whatever, you're going straight there and not looping.. so yea biking would be faster, just like the more expensive 1115-6 bus (1700 won). You can go straight to Jamsil and then hop on a train.. which will take around 30-40 mins if you catch the bus in Topyeong area and not Doldari. If you catch it @ Doldari, then it's gonna loop toward Namyangju. If there's no traffic, then it's just an extra 10 mins or so.. if there is, it can take up to maybe 20 more mins and around the intersection with the schools, it gets stuck there b/c of the people turning from the other direction.
Fastest way I've found is to take any bus that goes from from one of the doldari stops over to the Guriyago stop.. and then switch to the 1115-6 bus and somehow time it so you catch it immediately. The 1115-6 comes around every 20 mins when there's no traffic.
yes... I go to gangnam very often and have tried every route.... including the train. |

I lived in guri for my first year and I have tons of friends still out that way so I go there all the time. Guri is a great place for a first year. There are tons of foreigners there and being a Gyeonggi city means that you become can become tight with people there (unlike seoul sometimes), but its close enough to seoul so that you might not necessarily be stuck with them. The gyomoon-dong area is good. Your right by all the buses that go to Gangbyeon subway station which is a good hub to get into Seoul, and its right by the Dolodri market area where all the drinking and eating happens at night. The other good area is Topyeong-dong where a lot of foreigners live.
I loved guri for my first year, i wouldn't necessarily want to move back, I got a little tired of it after 15 months. But like I said, I still like going back to kick it around there. If the job is what you want, I'd say there's no reason not to take it cuz of the city |
