I used mine to buy wine online from abroad. It should work like a normal VISA card would.

Quite happy with mine.
It works overseas - when my friends cards(other banks) wouldn't so i became the banker.
It has a travel card function so no more need to load cash on to T money cards - plus it can be linked to Korean air points - and i use it everywhere so most of my spending accumulates air points ( 1 pt per 2000/2500 spend)

I was able to go in and get an international check card - with visa logo and all. If they aren't sure about it - refer them to their own website - which clearly shows that foreigners are now able to get this card.

Credit cards a little bit trickier, I haven't been able to get one since I've been in Korea. Does anyone know the process of doing this at KEB?

You have to be working for a University or a PS to get the credit card instantly....maybe chain hagwon employees can get it easily too...Otherwise I think it's difficult...Until i said I work for a PS, they wanted 1-2 million won deposit.

So how does one apply for a KEB credit card? MY local KEB was completely stumped, gave me that deer-in-the-headlights, "ohmigawd I don't want to talk to a foreigner" look and gave me a link to a (Korean language) website for the card.

They also assured me that it's "very difficult" for a foreigner to be approved for credit and that I shouldn't get my hopes up. Any truth to that?

Can anyone recommend an English language number I can call or a branch in Seoul that would be open on Sunday?

English language branches in Suwon, Anyang, or anywhere else on line one that keep Sunday hours are good too--- I just don't want to deal with the thoroughly unhelpful Pyeongtaek branch, and I can't get to the bank on a weekday.

And can anyone tell me what documents I'll need? My local KEB branch made vague reference to some sort of "certificate of employment" I'd need from my school, but gave me no information beyond that. Were they on the right track at all?

Basically your payment breakdown sheet that has the school`s stamp on it.

On Monday I went to the KEB branch in Itaewon to get an international debit card for my account and asked about getting a credit card as well. To get the international debit card all you need is to have your passport number on file, which I did already without knowing, and they'll give it to you on the spot. They told me that if I want the credit card as well I need to bring in a copy of my public school contract and a copy of my pay stub... They were wicked helpful and spoke great English, so I assume they knew what they were talking about...

Also, someone asked about a branch open on the weekends. There is one open on Sunday at Daerim Station (Line 2). I'm not sure of the hours though.

Go to one of the GLOBAL (English speaking) branches of the KEB at Gangnam station or Samseong Station..

Take your documents already photocopied along with your pay receipts -

pretty easy - takes a week to get...

p.s. - Its easier to get a Samsung Credit card...

however - if you want a KEB credit card - they will give you one if you are employed by a UNI or Public school and have your salary paid into a KEB account...

Did KEB's credit card company change in the past 6 months??

A PS or University worker can get a KEB VISA CHECKCARD but not a KEB CREDIT CARD.

EVery KEB branch I've been to (from Gimpo to Gangnam to Itaewon to Bundang to Pusan) have ALWAYS said the same thing. University employees, and expats working in Global 500 companies can get the KEB CREDIT CARD.

Everyone else can get a SECURED credit card, which means you put down a deposit and your credit card balance matches the deposit you put down.

If you are a PS worker, and you were successful in obtaining a CREDIT CARD from KEB (not Checkcard) then please let us know WHO is it you talked to.

Not entirely true. For hagwon workers its pretty much impossible. At KEB hagwon workers can have a credit card but you have to put down 1.3m won as a security deposit.

KEB's regulations changed one month ago...

Phone the lady (English speaking) at Gangnam station KEB Global center on (02) 3429-0126

She is helpful, and phoned me a month ago to explain that the restrictions are much less now - and due to some policy changes - its easier to get the KEB Credit card with NO Deposit at all

You might want to try NongHyup bank as well (if you do not have a KEB bank in your town)
