And I don't mean Hangman, Scattergories, Pictionary, etc. I mean activities that can be incorporated in different lessons to reinforce different themes. I'm not a fan of the mechanical drills the Korean textbooks here suggest ("repeat after me!"). I realize this is a pretty basic question, but I've never taught before and I'm wondering how to create some interesting communicative activities for my middle schoolers.
For example, one I've used is a simple matching game. I made matching slips of paper: e.g. on 10A I wrote a question (How about watching a movie?) and on 10B I wrote a response (Sure, I'd love to. Let's watch Knowing.). I mixed them up and had students try to find their partner. I'll probably use that same activity to teach them different ways to ask for permission. It sounds lame, but it was surprisingly successful. |

Songs:
Here's a link to the 5th grade songs, and a link to the 6th grade songs. Download karafun, and then just click and play.
Here's the link to them for a web based version. Also, bookmark my elementary youtube site. There are 82 songs specifically geared for young learners.
Resources:
Also visit my esnips elementary resource page. Look under general TEFL resources and there are a handful of .docs and .pdfs with classroom activities.
Don't neglect the activities in the book. While you may not like listen and repeat, you need to understand that your students might not be ready for something different, and the generally speaking the theories behind the acitivities are sound--it just looks simplified in the chapter tag (listen and repeat, look and listen).

Baam,
If you're looking for a re-useable game.
It's great, although I don't recommend using it more than once or twice a month. Any game gets boring after a while.
You can find off the EFL teaching 2.0 site. The link escapes me at the moment but I think ddeubl will probably chime in at some point to provide you the link. |

Chinese Whispers- Works well with Korean public school seating plans.
Get one student from each row outside the room whisper something in their ear. Have them return and whisper to the next student in the row. Activity continues until word or sentence makes it's way to the front of the row. First student to write it on the board wins game for team.
Speed quiz- Sometimes refered to as Taboo.
Make two or three teams. One student from each team faces classmates can't look at blackboard. NET writes random word from textbook on the board. Team mates try to communicate word without using Korean or saying word. Great for stimulating non text related spontanious language usage.
Peer Dictation- Net posts paragraph on board. Give each team blanks papers. teams compete to copy paragraph text. Each group has one writer and several runners. |

I concur Fling the Teacher is also great. They have a good one about Korean history. Most students will understand the questions. |

1-3 grade, middle school girls. Some of the elementary school activities suggested online are too simple for them, so I've been looking for other ideas.
I'd heard of BAAM before; I'll have to check it out. The other suggestions sound great too. Thanks everyone. |

Don't ditch an activity because the version you see is simple. If the dynamic of what the students are doing and how they are doing it is sound then please change it to accommodate them. So far you've said your not a fan of the book's activities, and now these are too simple...see where this is heading?
Learning about lesson planning and where/why you should use activities could help you here too--if you're interested. |
