One of the most trusted Antivirus testers:

http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2009/03/av-comparatives-february-2009-report-four-winners.ars

Quote:
Based on this, as well as how quickly the security software performed, AV-Comparatives rated the security companies from best to worst:

Advanced+: Symantec, ESET, Kaspersky, McAfee
Advanced: GDATA, AVIRA, Avast, BitDefender, eScan, TrustPort, F-Secure
Standard: AVG, Sophos, Microsoft
Tested: Authentium, Norman, Kingsoft
The results are on par with what I have seen recently in the security software area: ESET and Kaspersky are still topping the charts, and I would still recommend either.

Laughing

That's a heck of a thing, that Kingsoft. Missed 15 percent of the real crap thrown at it and then produced 60-odd percent false positives.

Gotta wonder why they bother.

Anyhow, Avira is free, and that puts in into the Advanced + for me. Cool

Do either of them slow your computer down at all?

Because Norton antivirus is just too frustratingly slow.

I found ESET slows things down the least, but Kaspersky didn't slow it down too much, either. Overall, I am happy that Kaspersky runs quite smoothly. I tested ESET for a month on my work computer, and liked it a lot. The problem is that it's often overpriced and didn't seem to be able to completely clean one nasty USB key virus I had. Kaspersky was able to when I tested it on my wife's computer. I felt ESET was great on finding things, but not so great at cleaning them when it did.

But that was just one issue with one file.
