Manny Ramirez was suspended for 50 games today by MLB for testing positive for a banned substance.

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (AP)Manny Ramirez(notes) joined a growing lineup of All-Stars linked to drugs Thursday, with the dreadlocked slugger banished for 50 games by a sport that cannot shake free from scandal.

The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder was suspended by Major League Baseball for a drug violation, adding a further stamp to what will forever be known as the Steroids Era.

Its a dark day for baseball and certainly for this organization, Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told reporters on the field at Dodger Stadium. This organization will never condone anything that isnt clean.

Ramirez said he did not take steroids and was given medication by a doctor that contained a banned substance. A person familiar with the details of the suspension said Ramirez used the female fertility drug HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the banned substance wasnt announced.

50 games seems a little steep for a compound his doctor prescribed him.

Taking enhancing compounds does up the power, but you can't enhance the skill it takes to perform in any sport. I am not condoning his actions, I just think the whole testing policy is a waste!

BALCO - Pure and simple. We are in an age when biochemistry is taking off. Designer compounds that are not technically steriods when administered. When administered, act as a testosterone based compound and when metabolized, does not show the characteristics of steriod metabolites. It's only going to get more sophisticated from here.

Personally, I love it!

50 games? I thought it was 15.

Wonder why they tested Man ram anyway? Maybe Red Sox Nation are going after former players---one's that left with an attitude maybe.

I'm pretty sure New England could care less about him being gone. He was more of a distraction than anything else.

I am curious as to the frequency of the testing. If banned substance use is supposedly so widespread in MLB, why aren't more players getting bagged. I have a sneaking suspicion that most guys are tipped off as to when their sample time is coming. If it's random. Do they only test if someone is suspect? Does the whole league get tested at certain intervals of time? Something is fishy if only a handfull of players are in the spotlight.

Manny could have been set up! I know it sounds a little conspiracy theorist, but would it surprise you.

I read, and I can't quite remember where it was, that MLB was tipped off to Manny by the woman who wrote the upcoming dirtsheet on A-Rod. I guess the idea behind it was for someone to release this about Manny to take away from whatever is in this upcoming book. Conspiracy theory sure, but plausible I guess.
It's amazing to me that MLB has fallen this far, really this fast. It's gotten to the point that whenever a big name is suspended for something like this, the reaction is really more apathy over surprise.

Apathy - Yes, they feel bad because they know that MLB and the other 3 major sports are all about the entertainment value. So they feel bad that Manny is the latest scapegoat.

I feel that the old timers in the U.S. are behind the testing. Their thinking is in regard to the purity of the game and the past records that were accomplished years ago. I understand this, but the year is 2009. The 21st century is and will be very different from the last. It's all about the MOOOLA.

Charles Barkley had a great quote about 10 years ago: "You know it's going to hell when the best rapper is white and the best golfer is black".

I know this qoute is a bit off topic, but WTF - Mike Tyson : "Evryone has a game plan untill they get hit in the face". - I can't tell you how many times I found this one to be true, especially teaching in Korea.

2004 tainted...

Got to love it, because I don't follow baseball too much but Red Sox fans are universally twats and seemingly never from Boston. I don't care if he was only caught now, I'll just assume he was always doing it.

Baseball, the game where economically only two teams should win it if they are run semi professionally and I am supposed to be impressed when they do.

Careful there JMO - Beantown is my home. I don't care for baseball anyway, but the whole tainted thing will never be ironed out, ever. There is no way to know who was enhanced and who wasn't over the last 20+ years. The U.S. and Europe are drug cultures. Period. I am refering to the pharmaceutical aspect. The whole planet is pretty much a drug culture other wise.

My rationality was nothing against you JMO. Maybe your view on what is going on is old school. The past record holders did their work sans enhancement. I understand this and it's noble. I think nobility has seen it's day in the U.S. and that day seems to have passed in many aspects of it's society.
