What food is your Korean town 'famous' for? Let us know any others you know of as well. Here's a few I know of:

(춘천 닭갈비)Chuncheon dalk-galbi (spicy chicken stir fry with rice cakes) and (막국수)mag-guk-su (cold buckwheat noodle dish)

(횡성한우쇠고기)Hweong-song han-woo beef (Korean beef from the hweong-song region, usually barbecued in one of the many cuts or styles it's served in across Korea) and, (안흥찐빵) an-heung jjin-bbang (steamed bread)

(돌산도 갓김치)Dolsan-do gatt kimchi (Mustard stem kimchi from the island off the coast of Yeosu)

(광얀숯불갈비)Gwangyang sut-bul-galbi (spicy galbi cooked over coals)

(안동 찜닭) An-dong Jjim-dalk (spicy chicken dish)
(안동소주) An-dong soju. Stronger more traditional version of soju. I think it's made from rice rather than other vegetables like regular soju. I might be wrong though..

(함흥냉면)Ham-heung naeng-myeon (cold noodle dish)

(충무 김밥)chung-mu kimbab (small kimbab with no filling except for rice. Usually eaten with lots of side dishes so the lack of filling isn't a disaster.)

(전주 비빔밥) Jeon-ju bibimbab (rice mixed with vegetables and sometimes a bit of meat and an egg. Not really sure why it's supposed to be better in Jeon-ju than anywhere else.. but then I again I think bibimbap is the weakest dish that Korea promotes to foreigners)

(수원 왕갈비)Su-won wang-galbi (=..galbi)

(태능 갈비)Tae-neung galbi (=...galbi)

Any more to add to my list? It seems every town in Korea has adopted one food or another as it's own, so please add them.

Oh and if anyone know which town has adopted eel as it's local dish I'm especially interested since barbecued eel is one of the best, and most underrated foods in Korea.

Are they delicious?

Daegu is also famous for apples. I wonder whether Chungjuians and Daeguites argue over who has the best apples.

Raw fish. Rolling Eyes

K: "Eat this... it's delicious... and good for your health."

CM: "No thanks."

K: "Why not eat?"

CM: "What do you do with your sewage?"

K: (with a look of puzzlement) "I don't know... why you ask?"

CM: "Because I do..."

Yeah.. I was thinking of putting that in my original post but EVERY SINGLE Korean coastal town is 'famous' for it. I was amused in one coastal town when a local spent a good five or ten minutes explaining why the raw fish there was so much better than in another town an hour away. Apparantely the texture was so much better. Yeah right. The fishermen probably fish in the same damn water. The only conceivable difference would be a slightly better dipping sauce I guess. (Of course side dishes could be better too, but the point the local was making was that the actual fish itself was superior).

Koreans teaching us about Korean food. Okay, I'll bite.

one of my favorites... taste exactly the same on Geoje Island off the south coast as in Chuncheon near the DMZ. I've had it both parts of the country on multiple occasions. Yum.

Yeah, in Jeonju it actually taste worse than other places imo. I really like bibimbap, but the times I've had it in Jeonju (when went to that city's film festival) I have been disappointed: watery, less spicy, mushy, yuck.

I'm sure you could add another two dozen. I'll add a couple, but will skip the hanguel.

Hadong river shellfish porridge
Tongyeong dried minnow fish side dish
Wando dried seaweed
Jeju dung-eating pork

Don't forget that rice paper stuff you can find at AYCE BBQ places. My Korean friend told me its indigenous to LA and you can't find it in Korea. Probably would do well if someone brought it over.

I live in Jeonju and I must agree with others regarding bibimbap. I've had much better bibimbap in other parts of Korea and also in Fukuoka, Japan where I once lived (there's a small Korean place on Oyafuko-dori). I also find it to be rather bland. Many people tell me that Jeonju is the kitchen of Korea but I haven't really seen it...
