Nate Silver has a very interesting poll result here: Bush May Haunt Republicans for Generations

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/05/bush-may-haunt-republicans-for.html

It starts with the partisan gap for each age, but the really fascinating one is the second results where they laid the graph over one indicating who was president when that age group reached 18. There is an interesting correspondence. It looks like there is a persistant lingering effect of which party was in power at the time a person comes of age politically.

"Interesting Poll"

Were more oxymoronic words ever spoken?

Make it a game or flash animation so I can understand.

I do however remember very clearly the first time I was eligible to vote.
I'd just turned 18 in TEXAS.
There was a sweet little old lady at the polling station, at the cafeteria of a local elementary school. Not the one I had attended.
She checked my voter registration and driver's license, saw that I looked about 12 but was indeed 18, and said, "You are a good American!"

I'll never forget that. I was raised with the flag displayed in the classroom. We said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning at school.
WE EVEN PRAYED!
And I was happy to turn 18, and exercise my right to vote.
OK, I'll be cheezy. Think Norman Rockwell paintings. I was beaming with pride having fulfilled my duty as a good American!
Having proudly cast my vote for Ronald Reagan~!

Is 18 the magic number because thats roughly when people become first politically aware, or is it because thats when people first vote?

Because if the latter, what about the 26th Amendment?

I suppose both.
Quote:
The Twenty-sixth Amendment (Amendment XXVI) to the United States Constitution standardized the voting age to 18. It was adopted in response to student activism against the Vietnam War and to partially overrule the Supreme Court's decision in Oregon v. Mitchell. It was adopted on July 1, 1971.

My first formal exposure to politics was U.S. Government Studies, senior year of high school.
I'll never forget, one time Mum took me into the voting booth with her to show me around.
"If you want to vote a straight DEMOCRATIC TICKET, flip this lever and you're finished." Silly Mum.

But for Ya-ta and me, and more importantly, it also meant we could drink legally~!@ wooHoo!~ 18
