Yeah. They charge an extremely modest fee (to cover spaying/neutering if they've already had the operation) and shots and all that. My gf and I got our cat from there. I can't help on the location, though, because they recently moved to a larger place and I haven't visited since then. |

| They do NOT allow the cats to be adopted. They demand that you adopt them for the cat's lifetime (10 years+) which is unrealistic for most of us here. I can understand this policy with kittens (everybody wants them), but if you're willing to take a 5-6 year old cat for a year or two, seems to me they should let you take care of it. |

You do know that adoption refers to a lifelong commitment, right? You seem to be referring to fostering. You are a native speaker, right?
As the shelter is a non-profit organization run largely through the efforts/money of a few dedicated ladies, they have neither the resources nor the space to constantly be taking in cats that transient waegs no longer feel like caring for.
Having said that, they WILL take a cat back in situations where someone is leaving the country and can "no longer care for the cat" which, in realistic terms, means they don't feel like paying to have the cat brought back with them to their home country, I know this for a fact because I've seen this happen on multiple occasions in the year+ I've had contact with them.
Further, they allow fostering in certain situations. My gf and I fostered a kitten for awhile, when there was an illness going around the shelter and they were worried about the little guys getting sick when they were too weak to handle it.
So, what I'm really saying here is that ChinaBoy doesn't know what he's talking about and should probably keep his mouth closed unless he has something of substance to add to the thread. Spreading lies about a charity organization is pretty low, even for Dave's. |

I'm posting just so that the only avatars in this thread isn't cats.
PS. Are most of these cat's actual cats? Or do they have a fair amount of kittens? |

So what you're saying is that when it suits THEM, they will allow you to borrow a cat for a few months, with the stipulation that they can take it back at any time.
I haven't actually dealt with them, but from reading the rules on the website (yes, I was interested in getting a cat - ANY cat, not just a kitten like you and your girlfriend) it seems pretty strict. It also seems like they've had most of the cats they have for many years. I got the impression that it's just a bunch of ladies who want to collect cats. Again, that's from studying the website.
Maybe it's different. But to not say anything is suspicious about a "charity organization" (sic) is naive. |

As you can imagine, the kittens come and go quickly. Most people want kittens, not only because they're cute and all, but because it's much healthier for everyone involved if the cat knows you from when it's young. They get kittens fairly regularly, though, so if you want one, let the shelter know and they'll contact you when they have one. The prefer to get kittens out of the shelter as soon as possible because a lack of human interaction when they're young means they might have a hard time being placed when they're older. Unfortunately, a lot of the cats at the shelter are lifers - cats that were feral for too long or didn't have enough human contact to be viable in a normal human household.
Actually, the first cat we got from the shelter was one of those cats. We took her home and, for whatever reason, she just never adjusted. After three weeks she still wasn't comfortable, so Joon and I discussed it and decided to take her back (not sure if it's changed, but at the time the adoption was on a two-three week trial period to make sure both parties - cat and family - are working well together). A couple months later, we got Abby, our current cat who we've had for well over a year now.

Yes, pretty much. They allow fostering when the psychological/physical safety of the cat is better off in a short-term home than at the shelter. In our case, the kitten we took was weak from spending who-knows-how-long in a box on the side of the road. In his state, catching a cold meant almost certain death.
Here's the thing, CB, you are the reason they don't allow people to randomly foster cats. Your use of the "borrow for a few months" line is evidence enough of that.
Most pets form attachments to their family - human or animal. To constantly be pulling said pet in and out of different households is stressful and often leads to behaviour problems. The Nabiya ladies want to find stable permanent homes/relationships for the cats because it's healthier for everyone involved. If you think of pet ownership as something to do on a whim during your Asian adventure and then forget about when you go home, do the responsible thing and don't get one at all. |

They prefer adoption to fostering. I got three of my cats from them a couple years back. |

I fostered a sickly one for awhile last time they asked for volunteers for fostering. It wasn't like borrowing a cat to just hang out with, he was in rough shape so it was hard work taking care of him.
I've been volunteering there since around Sept or Nov. Can't remember when I started. They are not trying to collect cats, they just want to make sure the cats go to a good home. |
