| Does anyone have any ideas for this lesson? It seems to be little more than a lesson about teaching some adjectives and I can't really think of anything inspiring/interesting to do with it. |

when I first saw that, the first thing that came to mind was the INTERJECTIONS! skit from "schoolhouse rocks!"
mind you, given my tyranical coteacher, I'd never think about showing it, but from what I take it, it's supposed to help express emotional responses to situations. of course, given the flat affect of most of the teachers, i can see how this would be a problem for them- EMOTIONS in of all things, LANGUAGE CLASSES!  |

What a Nice Day, a song made specifically for the elementary school program.
Don't just use it for singing. Pause buttons do wonders for interaction based classrooms. |

My co-teacher and I finished this lesson a little while ago. Some things I remember doing...
- Played a card game where the students cut all the cards out from the back of the book and got in pairs. Then one of us would say a phrase "what a nice day/what a pretty girl/etc." and the students would quickly pick up the card.
- Talk about the structure of the sentences by using a PPT or flash cards or something. The point is that it's "what a ___(adjective)___ + ___(noun)___."
- We played a board game where the students rolled a die and then landed on a picture with an adjective/noun. They made sentences once landing on a new square.

This is the stuff that really annoys me about the syllabus. Using 'What' in an exclamatory sentence just means you're confusing the use of the word and could quite possibly hinder learning. Why even bother teaching that, I don't think I've used that expression for years....
If I was teaching it I'd just teach adjectives and screw the book. |

| They seem to like to replace "What a" with "Obama". I wonder if any of you other teachers encountered that with the song? It's funny hearing half and half. |

It more or less is a lesson about teaching adjectives.
I focused on three categories: describing the weather, describing objects, and describing people. The students by far seemed to have the most fun with describing people; it gives them a chance to both compliment their friends and make fun of one another during the lesson. Bringing students in front of the class and getting the class to describe them and having students work in pairs to write up more detailed descriptions of one another that they presented both went over fine.
I agree with Rufus, though, that the lesson should have been about straight adjective usage rather than "What a ____ _____!" exclamations, since it can be confusing, and although I did make sure a token usage of the "What a ____ ____!" formulation made a showing to make my co-teacher happy, for the most part I focused on basic adjective usage. |

It is a weak and unusual way to express emotion and insert adjectives in a 40 min class, but following the scheme of "look, speak, repeat" style lessons here, it doesn't surprise me.
I had to sit and explain to my co-teacher how ridiculous the format for this subject is. To fix the situation, I made a powerpoint showing the difference between statements using questions, periods, and exclamation marks. Next, I showed the kids extreme pictures (large burgers, chihuahuas, etc) to get them to practice the dull and overused format my co-teacher insisted we put in the lesson |

I got, from another teacher, a ppt of Guinness World Record holders with long hair, big eyes, tallest man, etc...and had them form sentences using what I taught them: What a tall bike! What hairy ears!
I also played Pictionary: I had one pile of cards that were adjectives and another that were nouns...divide the class into teams and have 2 students from one team come up. They pick one card from the adj pile and one from the noun pile...so maybe they pick "hairy" and "banana." One student from team 1 has to draw a "hairy banana" and the other student with him/her has to guess. Make a time limit, or however you want to decide how long to take....then switch teams and pick 2 new students.
Also, I got some pictures of monsters and chose one student to describe the picture. The other students must draw the picture of the monster that the student is describing. |
