Anybody know where I can buy a white rat? They make good pets. I've had'em in the past.

I looked around Dongdaemun and saw plenty of places who sold white mice. But no white rats.

I'm actually in Suwon but I come into Seoul every weekend.

Regards,
Art

p.s. I found a place in Dongdaemun that had an African Grey parrot, the best talkers of all the tropical birds.......he said he wanted 250,000 KW for it. I thought that was extremely cheap because I'd priced them out before and been given prices well over 1,000,000 KW. The same day I found the one for 250,000, just several shops down from that there was another shop who had one and he said he wanted something around 1.5 mil KW.

I also have a business card from a Korean guy who apparently breeds these tropical birds. He was set up across from that new pet shop in Haebangchon. He has a nice macaw and a nice Cockatoo and said he wanted, I think it was, around 400,000. His prices were much more reasonable. I've got his card and phone number if anybody wants the info.

I used to have two pet albino rats called rebel and basil. Basil once climbed on top of my television and pissed down the back causing it to smoke, fizzle and then go kaput. I used to have chinchillas as well and rats are much more playful animals.

Wanderer - The rat you are looking for is the roof rat from Norway. I highly doubt you will find one on the streets in Korea. Where did you get the whities in the first place? They are primariliy used as lab rats. I worked with those babies for over 12 years. They are classified as CD-1 or Sprague-Dawley rats in the biotech industry. If you have a connection with someone here in the industry, you could get one easy and there's a good chance it is microbe free if Korean lab standards are up to par.

As an animal, they do get a bad wrap. Very mild mannered until you really piss them off, then watch out. In 12 years, I was bitten twice. As you know, the bottom incisors are like swords. They also have the bite pressure comparable to a great white in relation to size. I had a hole in my finger for 3 weeks. I hope you find one. Watch out for the humidity with those guys>>>>>

Had a larger, female, cream-colored rat (Peaches) as a pet in HS for a number of years - she was super-clean, smart & affectionate - she loved to be petted, or just flop on top of a hand or foot. The dogs never bothered her when she was out; the cats learned not to upset her.

She would sometimes sneak out of her cage at night, and come to curl up by my neck/head to sleep. Sweetie.

It is a shame they do get such a bad rap.

In Korea, I also had 2 domesticated chipmunks for a number of years - but had to leave them behind, as Korea considers them a protected species, and won't allow them to be exported. Sad

As for finding one, might I suggest a simple inquiry over at KAIST??? The people over there are extremely helpful about things like that - if they can't procure you one, I can pretty much promise they can point you in the right direction.

Best of luck to you!

White Korean lab rats are superior to foreign rats because they use metal chopsticks.

I have three goats, and I can proudly say that none of them has pissed in my TV.

PS - buy a cheap brown rat and spray paint it.

Korea has a protected species list? Now that's something I would never have guessed, after watching the locals feeding chewing gum to the monkeys in Seoul Grand Park.

cj1976 - Well put! They have to protect every species that decided not to get the hell out of here. Now if they would only protect the Homo Sapiens species, the country would be biologically complete.
