|

Here's another case of using the "you don't understand Korean culture" line to save face.
The Gwangju News (an English language magazine in Gwangju) did a two-page spread on interesting love motel facades. Each picture had a caption, and the piece was prefaced with:
Quote: |
In Gwangju, the neon lights of a love motel are never far from view. Young couples use love motels to enjoy a romantic night away from parental scrutiny. Love motels are also a rendezvous point for extramarital affairs. Like beauty pageant contestants, love motels decked out in exotic attire vie for attention along the Gwangjucheon waterfront. |
A local Korean paper, the Jeonnam Ilbo, got upset that a foreigner wrote this article. An excerpt:
Quote: |

Basically says that the author has only been in Gwangju 2 months and doesn't understand Korean culture. She's passing along this misinformation to foreigners who are reading the magazine to learn about Gwangju.

it's not that what was said wasn't true, it's just if the author "understood" Korean culture, it would be all hush-hush - not talked about, just done
it's a face saving thing

Well clearly the writer doesn't know about Korean culture, because if he/she did they would have already known better than to write this article considering the kind of reaction it gets (which is pretty much 100% clear to those of us with enough cultural experience) - That being said, the media here is a pos and thinks it can control everything when it cant and never will. |

Koreans can be so pithy about their national image.......like any tourist to any part of Korea could even miss the dozens of Love Hotels and not guess what they're for. |

Love motels? That's actually a relatively tame topic that involves consenting adults. What would the Korean newspapers have said if the author had written about prostitution in Korea? Hmmmm? |

last time I checked, prostitution also involved consenting adults.
I find it interesting to see people writing about things like prostitution and love motels in the first place.'

I was in Gwangju about a month ago and was amazed at all the love motels- much more than there are in Seoul by the look of it. Another thing I noticed was a lack of DVD rooms; perhaps this helps account for the extra motels? |

I remember when I was relatively new to Korea and a Canadian trainer told me that Korea is a conservative country. I couldn't understand that notion since prostitution is everywhere, so it didn't quite compute. However, it makes sense to some extent since in Latin America there were plenty of such stuff going on that happens in Korea except for the love motels, perhaps, and Latin Americans are not so open about having girlfriends while being married or what have you. It must be exciting for some youth to go to love motels, I would imagine, but in Korea it's kind of like drinking alcohol out of a paper bag and trying to be discreet about the fact that you drink as people used to do in the West. Image is extremely important. The problem with such thinking is it encourages hypocricy, in my humble opinion. |

are you suggesting all working girls are "forced" to work as working girls?
or some choose that option because it's "better" for them (while others do not)
or are you suggesting that only Korean working girls aren't working of their free will?
or are you one of those loons who claims each and every prostitute never works based on her own free will? |

the Western surprise.. or faux moral outrage.. or whatever you want to call it at the existence of love motels is preposterously funny.
what these IDIOTIC MORONS do not realize is that love motels are ubiquitous the world over. Latin American cities have even a higher per capita amount of them than Korea.
what these IDIOTIC MORONS also do not realize is WHY they exist.
they exist because people want to fornicate.... (yes despite what your mother and your preacher told you.. sorry.. it's true )
The rest of the world doesn't have the kind of housing options available in the US. Many people stay with their parents until marriage... or can't afford a place of their own.... families tend to live together.. there is a decided lack of PRIVACY.
hence.. the reason for the existence of love motels..
is this sudden realization a reason for writing a stupid stupid article (like wow... look at those love hotels.. ) |

At least the magazine got a response from the Korean Media, and the general public. It's good to stir up the hornets nest now and again, even if it didn't mean to.
The magazine does this every so often, and lo and behold people will actually go and read it afterwards. Maybe it should make a habit of an every so often faux pas. |

I think some people enjoy pointing to the number of motels or massage parlors or special singing rooms, and contrasting it to the "conservative" Korea we've heard so much about. They think it's clever.
But in this case I think the author was pretty much just writing to draw attention to the interesting facades. Korean architecture is pretty boring, and so a giant windmill or a Greek God will stand out. Maybe the author didn't need to mention what they're used for, but then again why would she NOT mention what they're used for? It's insulting to readers' intelligence to suggest they're for tourists, and it's apparently insulting to Koreans to write that they're used for affairs or by young couples. |

points taken.
Korean "architecture" is indeed quite drab and Stalinist. Makes me wonder what North Korean "architecture" would look like.
and there's certainly rich territory in pointing out the differences between conservative "traditional Korean culture" and reality.
However, things not being as they appear is a theme not limited to Korea
and I generally find that whenever someone lets loose a high dose of Korea bashing, prostitution and related things are typically high and center in the related rant.
Which makes me wonder how truly stupid such people are and where they come from.
in the US I know places in the big city where the crack hos line up 10 deep, even during daytime sometimes.
when I visited Toronto the amount of escort and massage related advertising in the newspapers was stunning.
and I suppose they've never seen the ads on Craigslist.
So bashing Korea(ans) for having easily accessible outlets for things people have been engaging in since the birth of civilization (just imagine the first cavewoman who wanted a little more woolly mammoth meat than she had on her own) and not making an issue out of it (while keeping it "illegal" for idiotic facade purposes.. I'm just not sure what point constantly involving these places in the rants serves.
but perhaps I've veered off topic. If the point of the article was to merely point out exceptions to the drab architecture, so be it. |

emm....I'm saying that I know for a fact that most of the girls are forced into doing it. I know this because a Korean acquaintance of mine owns about a dozen of the places in the red-light zone near where I live.
I occasionally have drinks with the guy, he speaks decent English, and he has told me all about the business. At his places, there isn't a single girl there out of free will.
I'm not a women's rights advocate, I'm not outraged either, and there's virtually nothing I can do about it either. I'm not best friends with this guy, but I do see him from time to time and we usually chat about family, business etc.
He's a pretty normal guy, except for the fact that he imports girls from other Asian countries to work as hookers. He also uses his contacts in those rip-off money-lending companies you see on TV to force Korean women to work for him. Often for the girls, it's their father or brother than has run up the debt and they have to step in to clear it.
He will even offer me a freebie whenever we get a few drinks into us.
As for the Love Motels, yes, some of their raison d'etre is to service the market for young couples who don't have any other place to go, but they get far more older couples who are cheating on their respective spouses.
In any conservative country where virginity is highly valued, there is always a thriving prostitution racket going on. The girls you see in "Sexy" bars, Massage places, No-Rae Bangs and Barber shops (most of whom will sleep with you for the right money) may well be doing it of their own free will, but 99% of the girls in the red-light zones are NOT.
As for the girls doing it "willingly", I'd still bet that most of the money goes to their boss. |
