I was just watching some Zappa videos on youtube. What an amazing musician. What astonishing talent onstage with him.
I saw him in Halifax, Nova Scotia, way back in 1980.
Any Zappa fans out there? What are your stories?
It is the only concert I ever arrived stupid early and waited in line for tickets. Third row, floor, center.
Zappa came out, everyone stood up and started cheering, he said "Please sit down, it doesn't sound any better standing up and you are pissing off everyone behind you."
Everyone stood and cheered. A gigantic black guy came out front, center stage and stared at the crowd. We all sat down. He took a chair and sat on stage left for the entire show. We stayed in our seats. Everyone saw the show very well.
Awesome concert. One of the very best I have ever seen, and I've seen a few. |

When I was in elementary school my brothers brought home "Frank Zappa: Live in New York" and I listened to that tape for years.
When I was a little older, I started buying his albums, ship arriving too late for a drowning witch, etc...
He was an awesome musician. One of the best. and the humor... a legend |

frank zappa (and tom waits too, hey, same thread) is one of the few reasons i'm proud to be from conservative san diego. i grew up in el cajon myself.
san diego..meatheads, trophy wives, and hicks...but somehow a strong music scene throughout the decades. |

His "crossfire" (old debate show) interview is great. It's on youtube somewhere. |

He offered help to Jello Biafro during a legal dispute regarding an offensive poster in an album. I think Zappa died of cancer.
Watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that Yellow snow. |

He's from Lancaster. I know a lady who used to tie his shoes in high school. |

I remember when record companies first started having to put labels on albums about offensive language and Frank put out an album with a bit of a speech on the cover. Shortly thereafter he debated Tipper Gore (Al's wife) about freedom of speech etc and really made her appear terribly dim. I think she may have been the head of the moral majority at the time. |

Zappa was great. died of colon cancer in 93. Saw him with Vai in 75 or 76. You had to be on to play with that man. Chad Wackerman, Ike Willis, Scott Tunis, Ray White, Ed Mars, Bobby Martin, Napoleon Murphy Brock were just some of the ones who had the chops needed. Check the videos "The torture never stops", Does humor belong in music?" "the dub room special" Devastatingly great! R.I.P. Mr. Z. You kicked (and still do) ass. |

I was at that concert.
I came home from a university class one day and my father said, "I've got tickets to the Frank Zappa concert. Wanna go?" Dad was a steel guitar player, and while he wasn't an especially big fan of Zappa, he liked to go see famous or talented guitar players of whatever stripe. Actually the only thing he and I had in common was that we both liked Jimi Hendrix.
What surprised me was that the concert started right on time at 8:00, no front band, Zappa got out on stage and I remember he said something like, "Okay this is not going to be one of those kind of concerts so everybody sit down, SIT DOWN." and he waved everybody into their seats. I looked around the Metro Center and there was a sea of tiny red lights...everybody lit up at the same time.
It was a great concert, made me realize what I'd been missing all these years in a professionally done performance. He played for like 3 hours straight, no breaks, I had no idea a rock concert could be so respectful to its audience.
About halfway through, this big cloud of marijuana smoke suddenly drifted in front of the two of us. I took a sniff and glanced at Dad, Dad took a sniff and looked at me, and we both just broke up laughing. |
