tsgarp, we all get what you are saying, and if we all lived in Seoul and looked and scouted out the interesting eateries, I guess we would all be cool in your book. You talk about the homogeneity of western chain food and you have your point. But your point about chains limiting diversity of food is not. If anything costumers react to this marketing by doing what you did, finding the mom and pop operations that serve great and interesting food. This is so true of most large urban areas in North America. What about Korea, what Korea outside of Seoul and Busan? You talk about the homogeniety of food, well Korea has you beat. I go out to the front gate of my school, and their are many mom and pop restaurants all serving the same food. Very little diversity amoung all the restaurants out there. So the inclussion of a place like TGI Fridays is diversity. It is all relative. I can get my favorite tuna Kimchi che-gae at about 5 places at my school's front gate all tasting about the same....that is homogeniety of food, or if I so feel like, (which I haven't yet) I could spend a pleasant lunch having a burger the likes I haven't eaten in years.... six in onehalf a dozen the other around here, you make the call.... all eateries being local in the end. |

Hey, I'm not telling what to eat. If you want to be a corporate shill and eat crap, that's great. If you don't like my post, ignore it. You come on a message board and crow about some cruddy place because you're to slow to figure out how to make a burger and I can't comment on it? Enjoy the Fat Barn with all the other bloated customers. I tell you there's an Ajumma in Pusan who sells a burger called the Heart Attack by the local teachers here and she kicks Friday's ass. Oops, she's 200 miles away from you. There I go again, not being helpful. |
Who's willing to travel 200 miles to eat a hamburger? Raise your hands. Come on now, don't be shy.
As for cooking them at home, I'd like to take a moment to mention that beef is insanely expensive here, and tastes funny. I tried to make hamburgers here once, and the entire experience sucked. |

OK, from this thread I've gathered this much:
1: Some posters, in a positive mood, have decided to discuss a subject that they like.
2: You barge in and insult them for having tastes different from yours.
GEE, I WONDER WHICH ONE IS THE FUCKING WHINER!!!!!!??????? |

I am, of course, not only referring to hamburgers here, but the post-May 18th mood. Rather than have something shoved down their throats, they fought for what they thought was right.

Do you think people who don't like the CBC should go down to their building in Toronto and throw rocks at it? After all, they're "concerned", and they certainly think their opinions are "right". |
Actually, people do throw rocks at the CBC. Sometimes the police are called, just like the police were called on the K kids stoning McD's. People who throw rocks are usually aware that they might get into trouble for throwing those rocks, so it' no surprise. Personally, I don't mind rock throwing.
There's a group of people who've been protesting outside the CBC for about 3 weeks now. We let them store their placards in the building so they don't have to carry them home every day. |

Angry? I couldn't be less so. I just shoot from the hip. Corporal, judging by the tenor of your posts one could make some interesting remarks about you but I bet you would be the first to say what someone posts and whatsome is off the board are two different things. I do admit to being sardonic and cynical but I don't see any anger. As for winning friends and influencing people, it seems to be working. Look at Lush, I've already got a board stalker. |

Good call, Corporal & Lush. There is a pattern, for sure.

Good one, see Lush, that's how you do it. Seriously, fat out. Go on, I never told you not to. But keep in mind I wasn't the first one to get into a hissy and start with the raving insults either. I gave my opinion of Friday's, but hey, I get it, this isn't a discussion board, it's a mutual appreciation society and I got out of line for not being on your happy happy joy joy ride. So, fat out, eat two burgers while you're at it, one for you and one for me. |

Why does the manager have to get permission from Seoul to add somthing to the menu which is already on the menu in Seoul?
It is worth paying 12,000 for a good burger here in Seoul once in a while.
I don't see why Koreans cannot get the burgers too unless they will be losing money on the deals. |

It is more expensive now that U.S. beef is banned. Australian beef tastes different. |

Australian Beef tastes different because it is grass fed vs corn fed. Argentine beef is now big in demand in the States for people who want a more flavorful beef. Actually this is kind of backwards, it's the corn fed beef that's off in flavor. I think this is why I've heard NA's complain about Korean beef but I've never heard Aussies or Kiwis complain. |

Interesting article about Korean beef in yesterday's Joongang Ilbo.
A Primer on Korea's Best Beef
Grass-fed beef is popular among some in the U.S., but it's obviously more expensive and you have to make an effort to find it.
While the kind of feed influences the taste, there are what I think are more important health concerns like the use of antibiotics and hormones and pesticide residue on cattle feed |

Good link, I think though you can see that the grain and straw feed of Korean cows definitely results in a flavor closer to grass fed cows as opposed to corn fed cows.
Your concern about antibiotics is legitimate. But most cows that don't eat a cron diet need very few antibiotics if any. Cows can't digest corn properly which reults in them getting stomach lesions and dietary tract diseases which is why they need antibiotics. Same with chickens and hogs. The real problem lies closer to the bottom of the food chain. Corn has been engineered and cross-bred so radically that it no longer resembles anything close to its original form. It has lost a lot of its nutritional qualities and is very poor but very cheap feed.
The first time I had grass fed beef I thought it tasted odd, the second time I had it, I realized this is what meat is supposed to taste like. |

The picture of Korean beef in the print version of the article showed far more marbling than is typical for the equivalent cut of U.S. beef. More fat = richer flavor, of course.
I've always understood that antibiotics were fed cattle primarily because they increased growth, not to cure disease.
I don't have any beef against Korean beef, but rice straw-fed beef is not 100% grass-fed beef. Rice straw is not rich in nutrients, but rice hulls, however, are a good feed. Of course, let's not forget the practice of feeding herbivores animal by-products, which allegedly caused mad-cow disease in the first place.
Korean beef comes off quite well. |
