I'm looking for campsites that are less then 3 hours from Seoul by bus or train. Looking for relatively short travel times.
I know of Nanji island in Seoul, and the Taean Coast National Park Southwest of Seoul. I don't count the islands around Incheon because, with the ferry, it takes too long. I know there was a camp site by Seoul National Park but I can find no information on it. I also know there's camping by a pension north of Seoul for 30k:( and a spot on Gangwha island. Any information would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

You can get to gimcheon in an hour and a half on the KTX from seoul station which is in the middle of nowhere and on the way pass through a whole lot of "middle of nowheres". there has gotta be a campground there somewhere.

There are campsites at Bukhansan. You need a permit and reservation. I can't help you to get one. My k-gf called to ask a couple years ago and they wouldn't tell her anything more than "it's difficult." So I burned down the forest.

Call 1330, the Korea travel help service. They speak English and it's 24 hours.

Gapyoung is good. Lots of rivers and mountains and great scenery. You can sit by the river and eat Dok torri Tang and drink soju. Lots of Korean Bungallo style resorts. Get off at Cheongyangi and take a bus or Train to Gapyoung.

From Gapyoung you can go to Gangcheung in Gangwon do. Nice little valley with a river tons of cheap love hotels.

We just got back from camping at Jarasum (island) next to Gapyeong. It was really pleasant! You can get a bus from DongSeoul bus terminal (Kangbyeon Subway Station Line #2). Or get a train from Chungyangnee Station. Weekends tend to get pretty booked up, so try and reserve in advance.

Bring food as there isn't that much in the hood. Call (02)1330 and then press #2 for English service.

I would also suggest Muri Do which is very close to the Incheon International Airport. But I prefer Silmi (do) beach. Much more pleasant with lots of trees.

Have fun!!

There are cabins in Korea, but I don't know about near Seoul. The ones I know are not in hiking areas, but they are in rural areas and near nature (farms, mountains, etc.). They are popular for students in "membership training" (what a stupid Konglish term) and among families.

I've been to some with groups of Koreans, but I was not the organizer. I'm sure a Korean person could easily find some information about renting them as the cabins are a business.

I went camping at Wolchusan (not close to Seoul) and it was worth the trip.

The cloud bridge was great!

A nice place with cabins for rent is Jongdo Island - it's in the river adjacent to Chuncheon. You are out in a quiet rustic environment, but a short walk to the dock, a quick ferry ride, and then a bus or taxi will take you anywhere in a city of 1/4 million. Haven't stayed there for a coupla years but then it was about 50,000 won a night for the cabin. Has refrigerator, stove, bed, dishes and stuff. Nice...
