When I feel like a snack from the store downstairs in our school building, I often find myself digging though the pile of available "goodies" only to find myself disgusted with the odd way they've been altered/bastardized/Koreanized for Korean tastes.

We have a caterer who provides "Shany" brand pastries, cupcakes, etc.. They are usually pretty horrible, and I find myself inspecting each candidate to discover just how this company has ruined a potentially good snack. I find myself asking: Is there any of that brown bean crap to be found? Does that chocolate cake have a greasy taste with a complete lack of sweetness? Does that piece of white bread have an excessive amount of overly-sweet strawberry creme hidden inside?

What Korean snack has disappointed you?

I too am mystified by their obsession with making everything that is bread or pastry as sweet or bean filled as humanly possible. Sweet garlic bread is vile.

reminds me of that scene in Apocolypse Now when the chef was telling about all that meat being boiled.

I was at Emart and walked through the bakery department. There was the delicious smell of garlic bread. One of the bakers was making garlic croissants. I bought a bag, excited to find garlic bread. Bit into it and home and was horrified by the sugary sweet taste. Ugh.

There is a bakery on the corner of my street. They have cookies, donuts, etc. Everything looks great, but tastes horrible. I think the problem is they use coconut oil instead of butter.

Even the donuts at Dunkin Donuts are disappointing.

What is with the sugar obsession? I have been tricked before on the garlic bread thing as well. I cut out carbs, so snacks in general are out these days. Laughing

I think that there's a lot of sugar grown in Asia and this accounts for its widespread use. At least in Taiwan it seems to be the case.

Speaking of Taiwan, I remember going to 7-11 with my friend when I first got there. He had been there for about a year. He was showing me the chip rack and pointing out each one: "Don't bother. Don't bother. Don't bother..."

Don't forget to check for coffee or tea--or both--added to just about every kind of product fom noodles to sandwich bread.
