Yep, a cheap European backpacking trip with a side trip to Egypt is desired. I wish they were running ferries between Greece and Egypt or Italy and Egypt or Croatia and Egypt, but they don't. Must be how they keep the Islam world separate from Europe even though they mesh on some local levels. You gotta fly. Ryan Air and Easy Jet are said to be cheap ways to hop around, but tend to be North to South and South to North rather than just making short hops everywhere.

Eurolines is the European bus service like Greyhound. They can be very cheap. If you really want to push it, take their overnight buses and save on accomodation/time, but you won't feel too fresh when you arrive. But their service is decent.

But a good guidebook (LP 'Europe on a shoestring') and most Euopean cities are very easy to navigate.

Prague in the summer probably would be tourist hell, but unfortunately I do think it is the most beautiful capital city I've visited in Europe, which is about 10. Tallinn old town is very nice but the city itself isn't too special.

Not as beautiful and amazing as Rome, but a really cool city.

Lived in Amsterdam for a year, a nice city... but honestly if your doing only 5 cities in Europe.. Amsterdam shouldn't be on the list. Unless you really want to smoke pot or watch people hump on stage. Those are the stereotypes but its what makes the place "fun." Otherwise you'll be going to a place with some of the lamest late night action I have ever seen and really expensive everything.

Also, if you really like drunk Brits and Scotts, Amsterdam might be your place.

Honestly, its a nice place, but not a top 5.

I lived there too and would say it could be top 5 depending what you're looking for. I would take it over London if you don't need to get there for a connecting flight. There's really more than pot and sex. Great museums, architecture, WWII memorials, nice countryside to bike through. It is on the expensive side, but on par with most of Western Europe and less than London and Paris.

I would keep Rome (you'd be a fool to skip it in my humble opinion), Paris and Berlin. Forget Munich. Prague is good and not far from Berlin at all, but it really is touristy, though maybe not in March. It is a beautiful city, or at least the parts you can see through the throngs of people are. Also, Spain. Barcelona and Seville are still in my heart.

Travelling by train is really nice, especially in Europe, but considering the price and your time constraints I would recommend flying. There are tons of discount airlines and you can fly Rome-Paris for under $100, likely much lower. Ryanair, easyjet and others, just google it. Unlike a certain partioned Asian country we all live in they have competition there which drives prices down.

Remember, all these countries (with the exception of the UK, I understand that they are not party to the security treaty or at least they weren't 5 years ago) are part of the EU zone so the flights are domestic and very quick.
