| I guess by now it shouldnt be terribly surprising that the top brass in the Bush administration would have seen the post-9/11 fight against terrorism as a holy war. But GQ has obtained copies of the cover sheets to the intelligence reports Donald Rumsfeld was sending to President Bush during the Iraq War, and the unabashed (and creepily amateurish) blend of Bible verses, Christian imagery, and war imagery is pretty damned disturbing. |

I found the one which quoted "the writing on the wall" particularly unsettling. |

I find myself waffling between how much of this reflects the genuine disposition of the top brass in the administration and how much of it reflects a cynical manipulation of a core constituency. Either way it frankly scares the shit out of me, and I say this as someone who grew up among evangelicals who took/take all this old testament prophesy stuff very, very seriously.

Weren't the dossiers intended for Bush's eyes only? My impression is that Rumsfeld is a pretty secular guy(one of his closest friends and advisors is an out-of-the-closet gay activist). I think the religious constituency that was being manipulated by these particular documents was quite possibly a constituency of one. (Not that they wouldn't have had appeal to other religious Americans.) |

I saw that and thought the same. Karl Rove is also an atheist. It was Bush who was being manipulated. |

Not quite. According to Draper, the writer, they were distributed to about a dozen people. He's interviewed by Rachel Maddow here (at about 4:20):

My first question is WHO leaked the info to Draper...my first and so far only idea is Powell. No reason at all except for Cheyney reading him out of the party last week. We'll have to wait for the real answer.
My other reaction was WTF was Rumsfeld thinking? At a time when we were trying to separate the extremists from the general Arab street and avoid any accusations of engaging in a crusade/jihad of our own, WTF could the man have had on his mind? |

| They need to release the rest of the Abu Ghraib photos so we can read the rest of the book of Isaiah. |
