I've been advised and think I am going to, do an online TESOL course.

Is this a good/real course?

http://www.tesolcourse.com/about-ittt.php

I know it says 100 hour... what does that actually mean? Is that how many hours it takes to complete?

If anyone has done this or a similar course, what do you actually do? Can anyone give a summary?

Kind of a dumb question... but is it hard? I guess rather, is it mind blowingly boring?

any other input would be nice. It appears... that doing this 180$ course, will make me an additional 200000 a month at a public school... So it looks to be worth it.

thoughts?

thanks!

If all you care about is the extra 200k/month at your current place, then do it. It shouldn't be that difficult and it may be boring, but you'll probably get something out of it.

If you think that you can use it in any significant way outside of Korea, don't bother-- it'll be worthless. The only TESL certificates worth anything outside this English teaching disutopia are Cambridge CELTAs and/or Trinity RSAs. That also includes any Uni gig you'd want to try out for here that asks for a TESL certificate.

The British Council in Seoul runs CELTA courses in the summers and winters, for 4 weeks, but they don't come cheap and you have to be there throughout. (No distance programs). Check them out at www.britishcouncil.or.kr.

There is no question that if it will bump your pay grade 200,000w while working in Korea, then go for it. It will pay itself off in one month. I just completed an online 150 hr course, but don't think that it will increase my pay with the ps system. It was helpful to me regardless.

I don't suppose there is a thread on this where people have compared the various online tesol courses in terms of quality vs price vs time have they?

I've tried using the "site search" tool. But all I find are TEFL adverts.

I just wanted to find someone that has done a similar program to find what the program actually entails.

I used google to search. These 3 all came fairly highly recommended.
http://www.intesoltesoltraining.com/
http://www.i-to-i.com/tefl/
http://www.ontesol.ca/ontesol/?doc=documents/home

However there was someone who mentioned that no online classes are technically genuine trinity/cambridge certs since neither schools authorizes online classes for certification. They're all backed by the various sites and whatever accreditation they list, but not those big two. OnTesol for example has a trinity course, but its only if you go onsite. The Ontesel 250hour with teaching practicum seems to be one of the most highly recommended ones.

However anything of 100hours even if its Bobby Jim's House O' Tesol qualifies for your pay raise in Korea.

So what stops me from printing a certificate from "Billy Joe Jim Bob's Skool 'o TESOL", showing it to SMOE and collecting my cash? lol...

As long as it was a real site, it doesn't seem to matter as the posts I was reading from the search seemed to indicate there was no standard other than it was 100 hours long.

If I were a lesser man I might go about grabbing a domain name, putting up a fake site (ala that terrible movie "Accepted" LOL) and printing up certs for 20k a pop Razz
