Please note I updated what happened below. I got my pension, and everything worked out. I wanted to post it for those people who asked if it was possible to get a pension if you didn't go to your home country.

I'd like to know the answer to this too.
When I leave Korea, I'm not going back to Canada. I'll be going to Australia instead. I have no idea when I will ever go back to Canada. Does that mean I won't be able to get a lump sum refund either? Ever? |

He just called back and said if I can leave the country AGAIN for at least 24 hours, on a one way ticket, he can process it.
Lets see if it actually works  I just got another ticket to Japan (went there less than a month ago!!!)
So far I've blown $700 trying to get back $3,600 |

so u buy a one way?
It cost 186.00 to go to Taiwan on Cathay Pacific...that is round trip..check out the one-way and there where does the refund go? Korean bank? |

Just thought I'd follow up on this.
I got my pension today.
A round trip ticket to Japan was 200,000 but a one way ticket FROM japan was gonna cost me 1,200,000.
So the travel agent (and the pension office guy) suggested that I buy the round trip ticket and edit out the return portion, since the pension office won't be checking with the airline, only the immigration office to find out if I did in fact leave on the flight I claimed to be leaving on.
What they needed was a ticket showing that I left the country. Then they called immigration and confirmed that I did in fact leave that day. I had to stay the night in Japan then come back. You need at least 1 day out of country.
I got my pension refund today (1 week after the fact). I had the option of getting it sent to my US bank account OR a korean bank account (or anywhere else I think for that matter... you just need a bank account and a copy of the bankbook or some type of documents about the bank account info). |

When I was on my way out, I used a plane ticket to Bangkok as my proof of departure. That worked fine. About a month after leaving Korea, I got my refund. I was still in Thailand at the time, too. I'll be starting a job in Daegu near the McDonald's on the subway soon, and those guys tell me I can contribute to my old pension account with no problems. |

The person talking to you is mistaken (flat out wrong).
I collected it, did NOT return to my home country and it was even deposited into my KOREAN bank account (about 30 days after my departure).

The person talking to you is mistaken (flat out wrong).
I collected it, did NOT return to my home country and it was even deposited into my KOREAN bank account (about 30 days after my departure).

I could if I was on an E2, but I won't be working on an E2 visa anymore, so no 
Lots of people get their pensions and change their mind and work again. |

I second this. I, too, had my pension deposited in my Korean bank account with no problems, although I wasn't going back home to the USA. It took about 22-23 days. |

Give them at least two weeks 'lead time' and it's possible.
I walked in to the pension office with all the required docs./ID and the application (already filled out), addressed the NPC employee using the 'honorific' (even though he was obviously younger than me). He looked at me, looked at the docs., entered my information, looked at the computer monitor and said -
"You are entitled to X won."
"That's exactly what I calculated."
"I am concerned... you are leaving Korea... but want your refund deposited to a Korean bank account. How will you get your money?"
"Oh... I'm coming back. I start a new job with X POE after I go to X & X countries on vacation."
"Ahhh... I see... I will try and have it deposited to your account before you leave... you might need the money for your vacation."
I shrugged and replied "That would nice, but I don't really need it. Kamsa-ham-ni-da." He smiled and said "Chun-man-ay-yo."
Less than ten minutes later, I was walking out wondering what to do with the rest of my day off in the 'big city'. |

Sounds like you had our ever-friendly, ever-serving, ever-logical, Mr. Moon, Masan Pension Office (11th floor of the big Chinese bank building). Here's a guy who gets things done and they're done like he says they're done. I look forward to dealing with him when I return to Korea soon. |
