Has anyone noticed the change in Article 7 of the Gepik Contract they put in the contract. They tell us they are giving us more and the contract is getting better but sneaking in number 7 of Article 7 I think is real bad for us. That means they can work us for 7,000 won an hour at any time. What does everyone else think? |

That 7,000won is not for teaching. You should be paid 20,000/hour for teaching. The 7,000won is in case you have to go on a field trip with your students, an overnight camp, or doing some prep work outside of your 9-5 working hours. |

Indeed, the 7,000won has been in place under the radar at least since the previous contract year. I had had my school look into it for me and that was the number.
It was good to see that it's been stated explicitly now in the new contract.
Now if only they would state explicitly the policy that leaves open the option for principals to approve paid-vacation while school is still in session. The Korean-language Handler's manual states that we are allowed unpaid vacation during school session (principal's discretion), but GEPIK co-ordinators say the principal has the option to allow paid vacation. |

How is that possible when Article 7 number 1 says Employee shall work 8 hours per day including lunch for 5 days a week Monday to Friday with no Saturdays, Sundays and Korean national holidays. If you are on a camping trip then you are responsible 24 hours a day for the kids. Also how can they force you to take a trip outside of the 8 hours. Number one contradicts number 7 don't you think. |

There is an overtime clause, isn't there? |

They can't force you to do this overtime. Overtime is discretionary, as it is outside of our normal working hours. Ditto for making you go on field trips - whilst I wouldn't go turning everything down with my contract in my right hand whilst pointing at it with my left, if you don't want to work for less than minimum wage back home then just say no. |

Thanks everyone for your input. English Matt you are right I won't turn down overtime when they really need me but according to the contract it is not optional. Maybe I am reading it wrong. |
