maybe I'll start getting less curious looks at E-mart when I walk up to the meat section and grab all the boneless chicken breasts off the shelf and then stand at the checkout counter with a big stack of the above Very Happy

I also noticed the more serious workout guys at the gym are now eating tuna out of cans .. I guess they're beginning to realize that despite serious workouts, eating just rice and kimchi isn't going to do it.

Men Eat Up Chicken Breasts for Tight-Bodied Look

By Jane Han
Staff Reporter

Who said chicken breast is a diet staple only for tight-bodied sizzling young men? With the latest social trend idolizing muscular and fashionable middle-aged men, 30- and 40-something men looking to tone up and trim down are emerging as the biggest buyers.

Online shopping mall Auction's sales data showed Sunday that revenue generated from chicken breast sales has shot up 108 percent on-year in the past month. Male shoppers accounted for 75 percent of the sales and among them, 30-something shoppers were the largest age group (37 percent), followed by consumers in their 20s (26 percent) and 40s (23.4 percent).

Ko Hyun-sil, a food merchandiser at Auction, attributed the strong sales to the recent fad for ``beautiful older men,'' an image characterized in MBC's popular drama ``Queen of Housewives.''

In the drama, typical ``ajeossi,'' or middle-aged men, who are stereotyped to be outmoded and have little physical allure, are nowhere to be found. All three main male characters are fit and stylish, each with their own manly appeal.

``The television show has triggered even ordinary men to work their way toward becoming these hot characters,'' she said, adding that weight control is the first place people are looking to start.

Skinless chicken breast, which is known as one of the leanest and most protein-packed foods, is a popular choice for health and weight-conscious individuals.

Top actor Bae Yong-joon proved the lean poultry diet's effectiveness recently by shedding more than 8 kilograms in two months by eating chicken breast and eggs.

The growth rate of chicken breast purchases among 40-somethings stands out the most, based on the data. Their consumption soared 214 percent year-on-year, the highest jump compared to other age groups.

According to Auction, male shoppers in their 40s also showed off their purchasing power in the health supplement categories. While sales of diet supplements leaped 25 percent year-on-year, 40-somethings generated 24 percent of the revenue.

``Social trends trigger all sorts of fads, but the latest one is beneficial because it ultimately helps middle-aged people look after their health more,'' said Kim.

If here's anything like the west that'll mean within a decade or two there'll be a noticeable difference in overall breast sizes. In the West, there's link to the overuse of estrogen in chickens (to make 'em more plump and tasty) and an earlier onset of puberty and increase in bra sizes over the past few decades. Though, if only men start eating chicken breasts here I guess we'll see an increase in man *beep* Shocked

being more a leg and a man, vanislander that doesn't bother me.. and I have seen some with some nice chests.. though it's often hard to tell with those very pointy push up or filled out bras they wear.

(sometimes I see an older woman with a bra.. then outside the bra.. there is this shapeless mass, presumably the remainder of hear breasts surrounding it.. looks very lumpy and unappealing.. and every time I see it I think WTF?)

anyways - I can live with K breasts, the valley in the gluteal region is another matter.

btw.. VERY funny comment in the Korea times comment section.

One poster, a woman asks - does this mean that chicken prices are going up, especially considering it's the only somewhat economical options for meat?

well, knowing Korean "pricing" as I do.. I'm afraid she may be on to something.

They'll explain upcoming price markups on higher demand... adjeosshi hysteria based on a TV show.

in world of deflation, there's always Korea Rolling Eyes

On bulking up,

holy crap a weeks supply of Whey is 30,000 won.

No wonder they are eating chicken breast. It's a much cheaper protein alternative.

FYI - For anyone looking for good chicken breast, Costco carries 6kg flash-frozen bags of goodness from the U.S. of A. in their freezer section... Price runs anywhere from 30 - 35k depending on the month... Very Happy

The tuna here tastes fantastic. (well the canned stuff with the different flavours tastes fantastic - better than the dry, horrible tasting crap back home)

Someone at a bar this weekend asked me if foreigners prefer chicken breasts. I thought to myself, that's got to be the strangest one I've gotten yet. Then I come here and see this. I wonder if the two incidents are at all related.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I basically eat chicken breasts for dinner each and every day. I put them on the foreman grill and voila... chop up a big carrot and am still searching for a decent carb source that's "low carb" yet satiating and not higly caloric.;

seems to me that for foreigner who have issues with Korean food, chicken breasts would be their easiest and cheapest meat alternative, right? so I would think chicken would generally be popular with foreigners here.

this article is about adjeosshi mania vis a vis them though Smile
kind of funny.

I will say this about many K adjeosshis though - they are about a 100x better looking than the fat plumber's crack, beer belly North American middle aged males.. Just think Homer Simpson.

Though I laugh at the young "fairy" boys, I have a lot of respect for how the middle aged Korean male looks. (especially in comparison to Westerners who aren't a subset of the older crowd that works out)

Yeah, unfortunately those same bags were selling for less than 20,000w as little as 9 months ago. I stopped buying them. The fresh ones in the meat section used to be 10,000 and are now 15,000 (still a better deal if you buy a couple and put a few breasts per zip-loc, freeze and then cook when you want).

hmm.. yes.. you are correct.

the problem is I would have to make it... the nice thing about the Foreman is I don't have to do any "cooking".

but if there is an easy way to prepare it, I am ALL ears.

btw.. has whey protein really shot up in price? I was about to try some.

I don't think the chicken breasts I buy at E-mart have gone up in price within the last year in any noticeable amount. (unlike almost EVERYTHING else)'
